Knife for my 13 year old

I bought a buck knife for my niece a few years ago--when she was about 13. Seemed to fit her hand quite well. I believe it was a Buck 105.

Just teach him how to use it safely, and that a dull knife is more dangerous for the user than a sharp one.

Thanks for all the replies. Where did you find the master hunter for $84?

I second the Cold Steel Master Hunter. I'm not a fan of CS but there is something satisfying about that knife.
I gave the one I had to a good friend and miss it enough to want another.
Its hard to beat for $84

How about a Becker bk24? I think it's a little longer than the izula 2 and has the same handle! D2 is a wear resistant steel so it should hold an edge longer but it will be harder to sharpen. Many call it a semi stainless steel so it will be more rust resistant than 1095. I think they're about $50 and I would invest in a custom kydex sheath from azwelke (just google him) and a $1.50 bottle of bottle of mineral oil :). That should be under you $100 budget. Why can't he oil a blade?

he won't oil it. he will either forget or just not do it. and there's no way he will carry oil with him in the woods. it's tedious. needs to be stainless

I think my dad would say if you can't oil your shit you don't need it. So i would either learn to oil it or wouldn't have it. He's also not a fan of carbon steel knife blades. wtf

AG Russell deer hunter, or the Buck Pathfinder or 119. Just another thought bit me, the Grohmann knives, also on AG Russell site.

My father would have never bought me anything knowing that I was unwilling to take care of it. I have had carbon knives for 40+ years and have never had the need to carry oil in the woods. All you have to do is clean it and wipe it off. Really really simple. Just because something is stainless does not mean it will not rust or stain if not taken care of. What about when it comes time to sharpen it?

Hello,

I would look at a Scrap Yard SYKCO 411. Its $100 but dose not come with a sheath. The good thing about that is you can make or have one made to fit his needs. I have noticed most of the sheaths my fixed blades have came with aren't very good and now I just make my own out of kydex. Scrap Yards warranty is awesome and if he is anything like I was he may need to use it someday. I can send you my kydex press and tools if you want to make your own sheath with your son. Its really easy to do and if you use a tek-lok you have a lot of carry options. PM me if your interested.

Have a good one,

Chris

This is a great option that I plus one. Even though there is no sheath it is quality and will last forever if the blade is taken care of. And of the Scrapyard or Swamp rat smaller blades would be my vote and eventually he can buy a quality Kydex sheath for it. ESEE 3 would be another option but you are trying to stay away from 1095. The Beckers are great choices too as stated previously. I tend to stray away as many of the designs look basic and lack character compared to scrapyard, but that is just my taste. I still love their products and use them.

I sharpen my knives on the edge pro. So I will be sharpening his knife for him. We spend allot of time in the mountains in PA wading through the rivers and hiking, hunting etc. So the knife will get wet. Stainless steel just seems more practical. Also he will not be chopping with it. After he uses/carries my F1 he always wipes it off and dries out the sheath. So he does care for the blade. I also own several of the ESEE line of knifes and they are 1095 carbon. I try to keep them away from water though, hence my F1.

Not everyone likes carbon steel blades. wtf

SOG stuff would work >> NW Ranger, Seal Pup elite (plain edge), Field Pup. AG Russell stuff is okay as recommended. I personally would recommend the Kabar Becker BK-16, but it is not stainless. I'm just telling you my current favorite.

You don't need to carry a bottle of oil with you in the woods, you just need to remember to wipe the knife down when you get home. If I spent a couple days in the rain, I'd carry a couple of the Remington Rem Oil wipes that are sold at Walmart. Easy solution.

The kid needs to learn how to take care of his stuff and stainless rusts too.

I carried blued finish rifles for years in PA hunting, fishing, and hiking and I have never had a rust issue if I wipe the gun down when I get home. Would he not wipe a rifle or shotgun off if it got rained or snowed on?

Where on earth in PA do you wade through "rivers"? Creeks, yeah.

I tend to hold with the idea that a boy who isn't responsible enough to take proper care of a knife isn't responsible enough to own one. Buying him an expensive one, even in stainless, is just going to frustrate both of you. Knives are tools and like any tool they must be properly maintained.

Either teach him to take care of an inexpensive knife first before you give him a more expensive one for his 14th birthday or just get him something else.
