Knife for my buddies wedding

+1 on the carving set idea. If you want to get him something engraved, then look at an alox SAK. They're inexpensive, but not cheap, and def will remind him of Scouts. If you really want to spend more money than that, some SAKs have hammered silver scales. Or you could have a nice custom one made up by Bill Evans (Scibeer over on SOSAK). The Farmer is one of my all time favorites, and it's very classy despite it's low price tag. A lot of knife for the $, and that way you'd have more $ to put toward something else for them. Just a thought...
 
First thing that popped into my mind was either a custom Buck 110 with S30V blade or a Spyderco Kopa with inlaid mother-of-pearl.

Maybe a little out there, but how about an Indonesian kris? Sounds like your last name, is a traditional gift at weddings in Indonesia/Malaysia and is even worn by the groom during the ceremonies! :)
