Knife for my GF's brother?

He just graduated high school and I told him I'd get him a gift. He knows I love knives and asked if I would get him a knife rather than money or a gift card.

I figure I'll spend $40-$60 on the knife and I want it to have a blade that's 3-3.5 inches long.

I'm kind of leaning towards a Delica but feel like that will be a little small for his hands. Of course I know there's always the Tenacious which might fit him a little better.

I'm also going to look at Kershaw because I know they make great knives for the money and have a ton of stuff. I might even spend a little more and grab him a Benchmade Grip but I figured the Forum can help me choose.

Any ideas?

Kershaw JYD CB, it's a bit bigger than you want but a great knife nonetheless at about $70, but well worth it.
But if you are limited to those blade sizes, a Shallot would be nice, in either 14C27N or a ZDP CB, depending on how much you are willing to spend.

I'm looking for something that can be opened with one hand so SAK or Case kinda stuff should be ruled out.

Manufactures I'm looking at...

Benchmade
Boker
CRK&T
Kershaw
Spyderco

But that list can grow!

A Shallot will be added to the "might buy" list. Right size and price...

Thanks!

There's always the Buck 110. It's a knife I wanted throughout my chldhood.

What a great gift! I'm not an expert, but what kind of things would he be using it for? If he just wants a knife to carry in his pocket for regular, everyday stuff then I'd say go with either the Delica or maybe one of the Kershaw's. If he's an outdoorsy kind of guy and wants something a little beefier, then maybe the JYD or the Tenacious. If he's a water nut, then maybe one of the Salt series.
As a graduation present, I'd think he'd want something functional but also kind of "wow" so when someone asks "where'd you get that?" he can reply, "It's my graduation present". Pretty cool of you to do this for him. Good luck.

Out of those, I would only look into Kershaw and Spyderco personally. Benchmade has a new pricing system that has left a bad taste in my mouth and many other peoples. CRK&T is a bit over priced when you compare the quality to Kershaw or Spyderco. Boker is decent but not for everyone.

Kershaw OD-1 is great, framelock, g10, integral flipper, and $40 at walmart. It's a steal.

Imma have to say a Bryd Cara Cara G-10. Very cheap but VERY high quality. Or a Kershaw Junkyard dog 2.. Let us know what you pick!

It will just be EDC for him. I know he will use it at work and thats why I want to keep it to one hand openers.

Charlie Mike - Buck 110 is nice. I lost mine and need to get another but I dont think I want to get him one. Thanks for reminding me I need another!

Grayson - You bring up many valid points and I already looked at the Salts but I dont think he'll be around water that much. JYD has been added to the list!

Blade - OD-1 looks like another good one

I second the Cara Cara. Send it to me before you give it to him and I'll wave it ;)

Waved by me, double edged (zero ground) and lanyard holed by Reese Weiland.

JYD II and Cara Cara will be a little too large.

If JYD II is too big, then the Tenacious seems like a great fit. Great blade, good steel, feels amazing and opening and closing is awesome. I have small hands and if it fits me pretty well it ought to be great for him. What kind of work does he do? Did I miss that? Also, would he want PE or SE? I hope all of this helping. There is a lot out there to choose from. I'm partial to Spyderco but I also have a Buck, an older Benchmade, and a couple of Kershaws. All great knives. Good luck and let us know what you choose.

He's a waiter/cook so it will be used for opening box, packages, and all that random stuff there is to cut at a BBQ joint. Of course he wont be using it for cooking but everything else. When I was 16 I worked at Taco Bell and there was always stuff that needed to be cut open. It took about 2 months until everyone that worked there saw how much I used mine and went and picked up a pocket knife. Seems like that was yesterday but its been years now...

I'll get him PE so I can show him how to sharpen it.

I got a Kershaw Leek as an Eagle Scout gift and that's what got me into knives. I just thought those little AO were the coolest thing ever and after carrying it for a while my roommate and a couple of my other friends bought one as well. As a "first" knife of sorts I would recommend a Kershaw Leek or the Kershaw Shallot.
