Hey all, I looked through and read 9 pages of pertinent threads, but thoughts I'd create yet another "which knife" thread. Sorry! :o

My girlfriend needs a knife. It won't be pocket carried daily, but should have a pocket clip. She was looking at the Benchmade Presidio's and liked them a lot, but I don't know if this is best. Is this a good knife that can hold it's own, even when we hike in the back country?

Good materials, blade steel? Stay sharp or acceptably sharp for longer periods? Good enough for mild abuse if need be?

Suggestions welcome. She doesn't have a budget, but probably in the $100-125 range.

since she's not a knife person, my wife is pretty happy with her kershaw leek/onion - don't remember which ine it is, but it was inexpensive, does what she needs it to do, and fairly sturdy.
OTOH, she loves her leatherman wave.

She'd like a folder, definitely not pink or pretty.

That she's female is redundant. What knife would you buy for the money?

I have given my wife a couple knives: a Spyderco Cricket, a Kershaw Leek, and Benchmade 525 (mini-Presidio).
Of the three, she prefers to carry the Leek most often (since it's slimmer than the 525, and nice & pointy). The 525 comes in a close second, since she likes the axis lock. The Cricket takes last place, I think (she keeps it in her desk at work), probably because of its unusual blade shape.

My fiancée keeps a Victorinox Classic SD on her keychain, and it tends to handle most of the tasks she comes across. She's not really into knives, but appreciates a sharp blade, so every now and again, I'll take her Classic and give it a touch-up. Besides that, I leave a Victorinox Tinker in the glove box for larger tasks.

How about a Spyderco Ladybug? If she prefers a larger size, there's also the option of a Spyderco Dragonfly or Byrd Robin. Small enough to disappear in a bag but large enough to handle most tasks.

+1 for the Para, even though I don't own one I think it's a good option.

FWIW the spyderco Manix 2 is built like a tank. The 154CM model goes for about $70. You can get it in S30V for a bit more cash.

Is the knifeworks.com the best price on the Para?

Thanks for the suggestions.

Right now she carries a Swiss Army knife, looking to step her up into something more serious, more durable, and something we can take on our 2700 mile hike (non-stop) that I won't worry about breaking.

The Benchmade Grip or Mini Grip couldn't be a bad idea.
Good quality, solid lock-up, easy function, and sheeple friendly with pink, green, yellow, purple color combos.

You could go with the Manix II

WELCOME TO BLADEFORUMS!

For hiking and outdoor knives I generally trust back-locks, liner locks, and frame locks the most (even slip joints). I don't have a compression lock, but it is in the liner lock family from what I understand. I have never dropped an axis lock in the mud before, but it seems like the mechanism would not work so well if it was covered in mud and dirt. I have had omega springs break on me before so I may be a little bias.

If this is gonna be pocket or pocketbook carried, the 520 or 525 may be a bit heavy or bulky. A good option in your price range would be either a Ritter Grip or mini-Ritter. They are great for EDC or on hiking/camping excursions. A Spyderco Caly 3 would do well also.

Both of those knives went to AK with my best mate's wife and she uses 'em regularly up there. They're FAA employees and avid outdoor people year 'round, so there's no doubt that those two knives can take a bit of serious usage.

If she really likes metal handles, a BM 707 might be just the ticket. If you want G10, you might check out the BM Bone Collector folders. They look like Grips/mini-grips with G10 handles.

If She is wanting a knife with Pink handles I would say either a benchmade Grip or Spyderco native... If color is not biggie I would say Benchmade 710 or 705, or a 707..

you can get her one of these, she can wear it when she isnt useing it and use the small knife to cut small things. Ordered one for my girlfriend for valentines (blue/black/silver) that she plans to wear every day.

She won't ever have a colored knife, I think if I bought her one or suggested she buy one she'd use it to remind me she's a woman, but not a 'woman.'

I'll check out some more thanks guys.

I like all of the knives mentioned, and think that eventually she should one of each.... I'd add to the list the composite blade Kershaw Junkyard Dog II w/ G10. I ordered some from Kershawguy (the blems) and LOVE them (one for me, two for co-workers). It is a great knife, solid, CPM-D2 for the cutting edge, and you can get the Blems (I cannot tell what the blem is on any of them) for $42... great deal.

If she really liked the Presidio, get her the Presidio!

It's always good to shop around, but if she found one she likes, I'd say go for it.
