Knife for my sister

OK, I will give you the finger nail thing. BUT, not all of us have fingernail issues.

I'm new; does spring assisted make it a switchblade? Moreover, does the word "assisted-open knife" translate to "switchblade?" If not, does that make an assisted-open knife legal?

No, a switchblade is held shut by a mechanical latch and opens by spring force when the latch is released, usually by pushing a button. An assisted opener have a spring, but it is set up so that the blade is held shut by the spring until the blade is pushed partly open. The spring then takes over and opens the blade the rest of the way. While there may be a safety to prevent accidental opening, the blade must be started manually - it won't open at the touch of a button.

In my opinion, it is just a workaround for switchblade laws. In some jurisdictions, they are considered the same as a switchblade.

An exception to the rule does not mean that the general rule doesn't apply.

I know about the pink thing too... heck, my girlfriend's knife is all black and the 20ga I got her is brown, she loves both.

So I showed my wife a few of my knives, including a leek, mini-grip, delica, ladybug, and a gerber evo jr. I really pushed her hard towards the leek even adding that it came in pink. Her response was a little unexpected. The conversation went something like this:

me: "So you know, the Leek is very elegant, sleek, and even comes in pink!"

her: "No, I like that one" - pointing to the mini-grip.

me: "But the leek is so much more elegant. The Mini-Grip is more utility oriented. But I guess if that's what you like, lucky for you the Mini-Grip comes in pink too!"

her: "No, I like THAT one", again point to the mini-grip, my black mini-grip. "If I'm going to carry a knife, I don't want it to be a sissy one. I want some that looks like a knife. Can I have THAT one (now)?"

me: "No."

LOL!!!! THAT is truth.

Howdy and Welcome,
No sir, "assisted open" does not mean switchblade.
Switchblade is "push a button and the blade jumps out." A switchblade is referred to as an "auto".
Assisted open is "open blade part way by hand and then it opens the rest of the way under spring power". An assisted open is referred to as an "AO".

Switchblades are illegal in CA except for tiny ones. Assisted open knives are legal in CA.

Thanks for the info. Ironically enough, I went to a store today, and a guy showed me an assisted open. I asked the same question: "Isn't that illegal here?" And he explained the whole thing haha

Pink Leek seems like the best alternative. Spring assisted (with flipper), girly, frame lock and a good wharncliffe blade. It's three inches not four, but as someone said, it'll probably be hard to find a girly knife with a 4 inch blade.

Well if she wants a black grip, go for it :)

I got my girl a Pink Leek tho, I have a Leek as well :) great little knife.

In all fairness, I've seen guys describe and demonstrate opening Spydercos using the fleshy part of their thumbs, in which case, the nail would be less of a factor, no? I couldn't say for sure 'cause I don't own a Spyderco yet.

I'm glad you are looking for a knife to give her and not one to use on her. I wasn't sure until I opened the thread.
When I saw the thread title, I thought it was a trade offer. I was going to ask the OP for specs and pics, and suggest he might get a better response in the Trade: Gadgets and Gear section.
