Knife for my wife

After we did some hiking this weekend, my wife decided it wouldn't hurt if she had a small knife to carry with her. I was thinking about a lock blade, but would like to find one with better than a 440A blade. I was thinking about spending $50 to $100 range, if that would be enough to get a quality blade. Any sugguestions or links would be most helpful.

Well a spyderco Delica is a good knife to have around. You could always get her a small KFF from Colombia River Knife and Tool. I have a large one and it is a really good knife.

But I think that the best prices to get knives are from the store here.

At the upper end of that range, you'll find the Benchmade's 705, which is a very durable knife, and sized so that it won't tend to freak people out.

If you want to consider fixed-blades, Mike Cooper (L6STEEL, on the forums) makes a nice neck-knife, which you can buy for $50, last I heard. That's $50 for a handmade knife, and Mike will engrave your wife's name on it, if you ask him to. You can reach Mike at l6steel@aol.com.

Both knives mentioned are made of ATS-34 (or its American twin, 154CM).

I have several knives I might be willing to trade.

Please post a picture of your wife.

I bought my Girlfriend a Delica a while back and she carries it from time to time. However she really like my Emerson LaGriffe neck knife. It is a fixed blade that is rather tough to have yanked away from you in a struggle and very easy to use (just make a fist) I am going to pick one up for her at the next knife show...

Please. She is closing on 30. The neighbor would be much better, but then she would know. Though I do have some close up rear "gifts", but that is not quite the purpose of this site.

I have a BM 330P it's a nice knife, looks great, very smooth, a knife anyone would love to carry. 1SKS has them for about $125 new I think.

Check out the baby Jess Horn in thediscontinued section of the Spyderco website. A very nice little knife, and a good deal at that price.

While you're there, also check out the Calypso Jr. Lightweight. Superior steel, good ergonomics, and available for around $50 from a number of internet dealers.

Amen, the 705 was my first thought. Small, great blade, ultra reliable lock and non offensive (if that matters to you??).

I have a 705 and it's an excellent piece that my wife has been known to use from time to time even though she's not a knife person.

One thought might be to get her a medium CRKT Mirage at Smoky Mountain Knife Works for $10, and use the rest of your money to buy yourself another knife.

Or, the CRKT Apache II at Bayou LaFourche -- not listed right now, but talk to Roger, am sure he'll give you a good deal. Or, also at BL, the old style mini AFCK by Benchmade. About $63, a good size for a woman, and a very highly praised knife -- well at least the big AFCK is.

Back to CRKT. How about the new Wasp, Tighe Tac, or Bladelock? I really like my large LUS, use it for EDC backup. Or, the carbon fiber M16. A very sweet knife, tho unfortunately doesn't have the flipper. A lot of people really like the Point Guard. Occasionally, someone praises the S-2. Think she'd want the medium.

Hope you don't have trouble making decisions.

My girlfriend carries the small CRKT Urban Shark, she noticed it online when I was surfing knife sites and immediately said she liked it. I'm just about to order the slighty bigger one now, as I think the small one is a little too small for her... ok, actually its just an excuse for me to place another knife order.

my wife loves her CRKT M16-00 w/carbon fibre handles - also likes the BM AFCK series ...

get her a small Ca legal auto first..she will
think its so cute and show it off to the girls at work. then she will want a better one! then the next thing you know she will be spending half of her ckecks on knives too!

Some of Spyderco's smaller folders are REALLY tough to beat in terms of quality and usability. If you want a small fixed blade, I would second the Allen Blade Chipmunk recommendation. I have one and love it. I think mine is 1095, but I'm not positive. They are under $100 last time I looked, too. Another good option for a larger fixed blade for use when camping/backpacking is the Spyderco Moran (either the original swept point or the drop point). With the new sheath it is tough to beat, and so light you forget it's even there. I was thinking about making a small fixed blade for my wife, who really isn't into knives at all. I want to try inlaying some silver wire in koa or maybe some nice ebony I have. If it turns out I will post a picture!

Kendall,
You didn't specify what is this knife's intended role, it could narrow down the choice noticeably.
Well, lets think together. I guess your wife (like all normal ladies at least) would have a great resistance to put the knife into real defensive action. Even if she would like to do it probably this would be done in way so uncertain and untrained that she easily could be disarmed by attacker and who knows if wouldn't the situation become even more dangerous...

So this knife probably would serve as daily utility tool and only in very hard-to-predict situation it could be eventual defensive tool.

Next, lady's knife simply must to be elegantly shaped and pretty looking! So large tactically looking folders with about 4" blade are rather out of discussion. Small fixed blade for neck carry could be suitable for outdoor activities but can look pretty odd at nice lady's cleavage in urban environment.
On the other hand I wouldn't advise to carry too small knife which your wife probably couldn't handle firmly and safely. So our choice got narrowed to pretty looking 2,5 - 3,5 inch folders. I could suggest:
  • BENCHMADE 770 Osborne, model 940 is nice but a small bit too large for lady (just my opinion, not excluded that your wife could disagree)
  • SPYDERCO Dragonfly or Cricket could be very good choices if you would manage to get Carbon Fiber version (probably pretty hard to obtain). Bob Lum Chinese folder also could be nice choice though it is also could be a bit too large for lady. Calypso Jr. Ltw. is very good everyday carry knife but for lady it should be somewhat prettier. Carbon Fiber version would be cool, maybe SPYDERCO could issue this one. Navigator could be nice choice as well.
  • CRKT Titanium Mirage is simply sweeeeet! If she would like a bit bigger knife think about their S-2 (two sizes to choose) or Carbon Fiber M16 also two sizes (and shapes). If even bigger knife is required think about their new Wasp.
  • KERSHAW Wild Wild Turkey or a bit bigger Ti-Hawk could be nice lady's carry if you could find one. These knives are discontinued, what a pity! New Ken Onion designed Chives also could be nice for lady, I have no ideas is it already available in retail but the prototype I have is really sweet!
  • KATZ KNIVES issue some models quite suitable for lady's carry. Their Carbon Fiber with 3" blade is very decently made and at the same time nicely looking utility piece. Also Money Clip knife could be nice choice. CF, mother of pearl, stainless steel, jadewood and cherrywood handles are available.
  • GERBER SLG 3.25 might be a small bit too big for lady but it is very decently made, lightweight and easy to carry, looks pretty elegant too. Think also about their AR 3.0
Oooopsss, I didn't bored you deadly yet

Since your wife is the one who decided that she wants a knife for hiking, you probably needn't go too far down the "look, honey, isn't it precious" path of knife-buying (of course, that doesn't mean you should leap straight on towards the "Eviscerator 9000 Tactical Nightmare Knife" either).

That danged Chipmunk is really cute, though. And, I mean, it's called the "Chipmunk", for crying out loud.

How large are your wife's hands? I find that the mid-sized knives from Spyderco are very comfortable in my (admittedly puny) hands. The Native someone mentioned is a nice, ergonomic little utility knife and comes in CPM-440V. The Calypso Jr. Lightweight is a bit prettier, the micarta version prettier still. None of the knives mentioned are so pretty that you'd balk at taking them out into the woods and beating the crap out of them, though. All have pocket clips -- nice because you can still carry them if you don't have any pockets (just try clipping a Buck 110 to a necklace) -- and should be under 100 bucks.

Those are my suggestions -- the very best thing, though, would probably be to take her to a knife shop, have her pick out something she thinks is comfortable, and take it from there. Good luck!
