Knife for my wife

Not sure about the laws there but a cute colored MicroTech UDT may be just the thing. My wife doesn't understand why I prefer a high quality knife over a POS but she does like my UDT. Maybe if there were more folks using (legally) cute autos then the fear of them would go away.

Oooopsss!
I have missed "hiking" in initial request and entire my previous post was urban-oriented, sorry.
For outdoors activities my choice would be a bit another:
  • SPYDERCO Bill Moran Featherweight, now it is available also with drop point blade. Their Military could be folding alternative. My wife considered both knives as the best tools for field sandwich making

  • BENCHMADE Nimravus Cub. Their AFCK or Mini-AFCK could be nice folding alternatives as well as Model 710 or 705.
  • Fällkniven F1 or their WM1 if smaller knife probably suitable for neck carry is required.
  • GERBER Yari
has not scaled down version but it is pretty handy and easy to use for ladies.
Quite enough for first look, isn't it?

This is very easy answered just use essential mathematics:

Small knife + high quality Steel = Native lightweight!

My wife is small statured and took a while to warm up to knives in general. She now routinely carries one of the two Spyderco C25 Centofantes that I bought for her. I keep trying to buy her nicer knives, but she doesn't feel the need to own more than she can use. She's still learning

Look for something durable and aesthetically pleasing. The lines of the C25 filled the bill for Denna and the added bonus is the Secure Lock which prevents inadvertent release of the liner when engaged.

Whichever knife y'all decide on, make sure you teach your wife the safe use of it and that a nice knife is NOT a substitute for a screwdriver. I'm still trying to remove the dings from the edge of one of Denna's knives

If you go a little above the $100 range, you could consider any one of Bob Dozier's little knives. These are great hiking knives, they are small and light and never get in the way. Or if you want to remain in budget...I know I'll get hell for this....go with a Gerber EZ-out...cheap and easily replaceable, it also comes in ATS-34...stick with a plain edge.
