Knife for nephew?

Is he a tinkerer or mechanically inclined? I would have loved a multitool when I was his age.

He's very into building rocket kits, and has a lot of fun doing that.

Reading the advice of some of you here made me re-think the whole one-handed opener vs classic 1st blade.

I just advised him yesterday that I think his first real knife should be a classic, such as a stockman or trapper type model. While the mini Griptilian is a fine choice as a one-handed opener, as are some of the other votes here, I'm leaning towards a Case or Buck stockman or trapper model.

the Tested Red Bone series from Case in the stockman version for example, is a helluva first knife. It looks great, is high quality, carries easily in the pocket, and doesn't startle anyone when you remove it from your pocket.

I know his parents are more comfortable with that sort of knive for his first. Like someone else wrote here, He's got plenty of time to have more knives in his life, and as he gets older I may even gift him with some of mine.

he's a great kid, and I am very proud of him!

I'm 14 and have 80+, and I'm sad to say most are tacticals, but I go for tradtionals now. I say get him a traditional slipjoint from Case.

Sounds like a brown bone CV medium stockman, or small texas jack would be just what your looking for. Of course there are always the CV redbone, and yellow handled ones. And if your looking for SS, just about any pattern from Case will work.

I agree that a slippie, like a sak or case, would be more sheeple friendly for a kids first knife, and yes he has plenty of time to collect more knives, and at first he might, and buy some tacticals, but more than likely, as he gets older he'll find himself carrying that old case that his uncle gave him, if he manages to hang on to it that is.
