Hi, I am looking for a knife for my brother for Christmas. Here are a couple of guidelines. Must be in the $20-$40 price range, has to have a clip, the coolness factor is always nice, MUST BE DURABLE. He is a construction worker so it is going to get the tar beat out of it! Trust me I've seen his old gas station specials  The search function isn't working for me so that really limits my looking. Thanks alot guys for all your help!

Spydie native or delica, or maybe Endura, depending on if you want to bump it up to ~45-50. Also check out Crkt.

Imo, the CRKT Mirage is the best knife out there for around 20 bucks. If you go to around $40, the spydie delica is a great choice.

Kershaw Vapor II, you can pick one up at Wal-Mart for around $30.00

CRKT M16-03, you can get off the web for around $40.00

I would probably suggest spending around $50.00 to $55.00 if you can swing it and get a Benchmade Griptilian.

Check out the CRKT Prowler. They can be found on eBay in your price range, plus or minus a few of bucks. It has a thick blade, solid handles and comes with the LAWKS system to help ensure safety while using it.

I would say Delica VG10 but the pointy tip may break if you don't treat it well or pry with it. Actually, for construction related work, the Endura Vg10, with it's thicker blade would be more suitable.

How about trying to score a secondhand CRKT lightfoot M1? That is one tough SOB folder.

Alternatively, why not the Kabar Dozier Hunter in AUS8 at only $20? It's received good reviews but may lack the coolness factor.

take a look at GERBER E-Z-Out. It's under $30 and the new model has a yellow handle that kinda cool ;)

I highly recommend a Spyderco FRN Endura. I'm a welder and depend on my knives(Endura SE, Buck 110) daily to take a beating, cutting everything from rubber hose to cardboard and manila rope and my fully SpyderEdged Endura has taken its' fair share of beatings and keeps coming back for more. In fact, this Spydie is so dependable that I also have a 50/50 Endura that I alternate with the SE. :D

I don't think that your brother would be disappointed with this one. ;)

Did you betray the Millie in your EDC rotation?

Actually, my Millie is still my fav, but I don't use it in my work EDC. (It's mainly my non-work carry.;))

Check out the CRKT Prowler.

Good suggestion.

CRKT's Crawford/Kasper Folder would be an alternative: one hell of a stout knife. Even though it's designed for SD, it performs utility tasks equally well.

OOO That CRKT Prowler has caught my eye! Can anyone tell me anything about the LAWKs system? Can you close it with one hand? I really like the Spydercos but it would be hard to close them with one hand (which I think he would prefer):( Thanks alot guys for your help so far and keep the suggestions coming!

Ryan, of course spydercos can be closed with one hand. Just need to train your hand to do it. The BIG plus for spydies at that price range is the VG10 steel, which can chop through the CRKT's AUS6 anytime. Oh, and that spydie customer service which is excellent. CRKTs may look cooler and open smoother (due to the teflon washers), but they have thin liners and not so good steel.

Yep. It's just an optional reinforcement of the liner lock that can be operated with one hand only.

spyken,
I have to respectfully disagree: IMO CRKT's liners are pretty beefy and usually very well-adjusted. And the LAWKS is a nice extra safety feature.

Another vote for the VG-10 Delica! At least when it's about cutting and not prying. A couple o' months ago a friend of mine was throwing cherries at me (don't ask.... alcohol) until I got fed up with it and cut one clean in halves in full flight!! Then we spent 15 minutes in total awe of the Delica's sharpness.

I think the Native is a little burlier than the Delica - which isn't delicate but still for heavy work I'd go with the Native. The Prowler is nice but the steel isn't great, & the Native is more ergonomic. & you can totally close it with one hand.

For the money, the Prowler. For the work it sounds like it will be encountering, this is a good choice. A thick blade with a thick tip, good for some low-rent abuse. My friend has replaced two buck folders with this one knife. It takes an edge too....:)
