Knife for office atmosphere

Hello, I work in a fairly conservative office atmosphere in NYC. When not at work I have a couple of spydercos I like to carry around (Jess Horn combo edge and Native combo edge in rotation). I was thinking of picking something up that I can use as an EDC at the office.

I am looking for a good quality knife with the following attributes:

- blade length of 3" or less (but not too much shorter than 2.5")
- easily concealable
- slim profile, it will probably be riding in a pocket next to my wallet
- high quality steel
- flexible application (utility? knife)
- price range under $200

These are general guidelines, I am pretty flexible. I have been looking at a few gentlemen’s folder type knives – something that will look “respectable” (very subjective term) if seen at the office.

One more thing; since I live in NYC this knife can be in no way construed as a “gravity knife” (a somewhat vague legal term). I have a friend who has had a small pocket knife taken away from him because some building security officer could (with some exertion) open it by swinging it.

Does anyone have any ideas? I would really appreciate the help. Thanks in advance.

I carry a Leatherman Sqirt P4. Its tiny and very sheeple friendly. You might want to look at one from their Juice line (larger than the Squirts).

Otherwise I'd look at the Queen slip-joints.

Buy yourself a Fallkniven U2. Very concealable extremly sharp and the blade is hardened to Rc 64....now thats hard! I have cut up dozens of cardboard boxes with it and it still does not need any sharpening! I actually got 2 of them when I got mine. The one I carry in my jeans watch pocket with a small lanyard to grab it with. Its a GREAT LITTLE KNIFE!

Ciao

Benchmade 921 Switchback, or 940 Osborne; meets all your criteria.

I don't own the 940, however the 921 would fit your requirements to a "T". Colorful, classy, AXIS lock, and the frame has a slim profile. The main blade comes a little larger than what you are looking for, at 3.3"; is S30V. The second blade is a slip-joint, 440C.

The 940 comes with a green handle, and is just over 3" as well. 154CM steel.

Handle? Yes. Wharnecliffe blade? No. I would go with a slipjoint, like a Queen, or CV steel Case.

Maybe a Benchmade 690 Elishewitz if you want a folder with a clip. I would say William Henry or a custom, but you'd be going over your budget.

Did he specify that he didn't want wharnecliffe in somewhere, or are you just disagreeing because of your own personal tastes?

Unless I missed something about wharneys, I think the 440 matches he criteria very well.

Since you have Spyderco knives and seem to like them, why not look at getting one of the Kopa models. Fits in with your size requirements and has vg10 steel. These are limited production knives, well under $200 and there are several different handle materials available. My favorite is the cocobolo Kopa, but all are very nice looking.

Sorry, I forgot to clarify, it depends on who is in his office, they may be freaked out by the wharnecliffe. Absurd as it sounds, I've seen it happen. My little Queen stockman is okay except for the sheepsfoot. After I tell them what the spey blade was used for, they're usually okay with the sheepsfoot :D .

I happen to really like wharnies.

These are some great suggestions, a wide range of options. Thanks alot guys, keep 'em coming! ;)

I suggest the Kershaw Model 2415 or 2420. I have carried the 2420 for years in NYC. I have tighten the pivot screw and adjusted the liner lock so that it is not a gavity knife, but it can be opened quickly by pushing forward on the thumb stud there by using the liner action. It is legal so lone as you check it regularly to make sure it is tight. Always keep your knife concealed when not in use in NYC as it is the law to NOT have it visible when not in use.

An aside question, since I get up that way on occasion. Are locking folders legal in NYC? I was under the impression (hopefully in error) that you could only carry slip joints up there. Thanks.
