I'm going to get a new knife for my Dad, just becuase :). I'm not sure what to get exactly, but I know I would like the knife to have the following qualities:

-Stainless steel blade
-2.5" to 3.5" blade (~6-9cm)
-Locking blade (not a liner lock)
-Maximum weight of about 4oz (~115g)
-Priced somewhere around $100
-No rubber or plastic grips
-Not made in China
-No serrations
-One handed open (non-auto)
-Tip up carry capability

Sorry, I guess that's pretty broad, but I am having trouble thinking of something. Anyway, let me know what you guys like. ;)

how about the g10 spyderco delica ?

I concur with 3mptin3ss-the Spyderco Delica G10 or the Caly3 would be excellent choices for anyone; great conversation pieces (about such things as the SpyderHole, the Boye Dent, and other distinct and unique features), and unmatched in your categories of choices in their pure functionally and aesthetics.

Gents, he said "NO plastic handles". Delica has FRN. Caly3 has G10.
Those are both plastics.

BM 707 has aluminum handles with inserts.

The Benchmade 710 can be had for just a few dollars over $100. If you dont want g10 handels either the 940 is just a little bit more expensive than the 710.

Well, it's a (good) liner lock but otherwise the Mcusta Kasumi with Damascus blade would be a splendid and well made luxurious gift. You can have it juuuust below $100 at the Damascus Knife Store site:

Ain't it a beauty?

Otherwise, staying with excellent Japanese knifemaking, Moki has very nice backlocks but I am afraid you won't find one (except the miniature ones) for less than $100.

Hi guys and AMRaider,
I'm a new memberknifegeek, and I would like to suggest something also.

CRKT has amazing folders in a lot of different materials:

CRKT Fulkrum, CPL/Stainless handle, AUS-8 - 2.75" blade
CRKT Kommer, Ebony/Stainless handle, 1.4116 - 3" blade
CRKT M21, Grey Aluminum handle, Aus-8 - 3" blade
CRKT LAKE Sentinal, Wood or Stag onlay, 8Cr14MoV - 3.5" blade

All those models are great knives, very sturdy and secure, although some are linerlock.

Here you have a couple of addresses from where I buy... nice prices... if you want to take a look to other models.

The 710D2 is a great knife, but it does have those plastic handles. Not that I'm knocking the 710...it's in my EDC rotation and I dig it. :D

I didn't consider G10 to be a plastic, but I suppose deep down it technically is a plastic-based composite. What about something along the lines of a Spyderco Scorpius? It's still readily available on the secondary market for wonderfully low prices.

Thank you Dagon- " the Mcusta Kasumi with Damascus blade would be a splendid and well made luxurious gift. I'm going to the the Damascus Knife Store site now .

if hes a grumpy old bastard, he aint gonna like them "pimp" knives. git him a CASE SODBUSTER JR. my old dad dropped dead with his in his pocket.

He may think of G-10 as a rubber too.

Composites are fine . I'm just trying to stay away from low quality polymers and rubber.

Thanks for the suggestions guys; great looking knives!

I do have one question regarding Benchmade's Axis lock. How much tension does it take to open those knives? I'm just wondering how secure the blade is when closed. Thanks again!

I find the axis lock to be quite secure when closed. It opens easily with the thumb stud.

Another vote for the Caly3. Mine is so light it disappears in my pocket. Its the best slicer I have!

+1 on G10 Delica. However, since your dad doesn't like Chinese made knives, how does he feel about Japanese made knives?
