Hey all my big sister just turned 19 and is going off to college in a couple months I want to get her something personal that she'll actually use... I've already gotten her a buck folder but she never used it or carried it...

my budget is 40 bucks for a folder that she would actually carry any ideas? My budget is hard I know but I'm only 15 so it'll have to do

If you were going to by a knife for that money, what would you get? Then get that for her.

That said, a nice SAK or multitool is perfect for a college student who needs a knife, or screwdriver once in a while. Always comes in handy.

What makes you think she is interested in a pocket knife at all if she didn't use the one you got her before?

You could always go with a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife of some sort. They come in various colors so if you think she might have a color preference, that would work.

I normally recommend a Spyderco Dragonfly in her choice of color. It is $10 more than your budget, though. If she is like most girls she will not like a large knife as her pockets are small and her purse is too (or large and filled with junk).

So, here are some good knives that are in your budget (all of these are from knifeworks.com):

1. Benchmade Lonewolf Mini Landslide, orange (also will not rust = easy to care for).
2. BRK (Esee) Zancudo (many colors).
3. Victorinox Alox Cadet (3 colors)
4. Buck Bantam (many colors)
5. Byrd Robin 2 (similar to the Dragonfly but made in China for Spyderco)
6. Spyderco Cat (I would look hard at this one)
7. Spyderco Squeak (does not lock)

My wife and sister love the leatherman micra with scissors. They both have commented about wanting something like that. Swiss army with scissors and knife blade might be a good choice.

I got my wife a Victorinox Compact and she loves it!
It's always in her purse and she really likes the scissors, tweezers, and nail file.

Good luck!

I give Leathermen to college bound people. They've all appreciated it, especially women. They contain the simple tools one needs in a dorm room. If you don't mind used, you can pick them up in pawn shops for under your price range.

SAK Classic. They love the scissors for their nails, and the tooth pick gets more use than the blade. Its as small as they get and easy to carry even in the stupid small pockets girls clothing has, plus its inexpensive. I've given many knives to girls, and this is the only one they universally like and use. My current GF just lost hers and went out and bought another on her own! She likes the Zing and Dragonfly I gave her, but if she lost them I doubt she'd go buy another.

Ontario Rat 1 in Pink..... perhaps the perfect budget EDC knife for a young lady who may need to open an occasional chip bag or defend herself from a stalker.... $29.81 if you look at the right place.

I'd look at a Leatherman Squirt PS4's, which are widely available at around $30. Colors: Black, Blue, and Red.

Thx all for the fast response I like the personalized idea I have an engraver so might try that

I might get her that

I'm pretty close to my sister and know what she would carry and wouldn't so the knife have to be sub 3 in. Since i am a overly protective brother it has to lock ;)

You think assisted opening would be okay ? That is the kershaw that I attached a link to?

Out of all the leather mans what would be the best for her ?

Since she's in a dorm next year that might be a good idea

I'll second the Leatherman Ps4 idea. The pliers are just big enough to be very usable, as is the knife. Pretty much the smallest dorm room tool box that fits on a keychain.

The Kershaw Chive that the OP linked to is a good knife for it's size, but very small. It's functional, and the assist works very well. If you lean that way, I'd maybe look more toward the Scallion. A tiny bit larger, but much more to grip.

I think the ps 4 is slightly on the small side

Does the leather man leap have anything to suggest it's a kids knife?
