Knife for Survival Kit

Richard,
what is your urban survival kit for? in other words what will it be used for? your expectations of it?

live saving functions. less something that will be used every day, more a backup for expeditions and stuff. traveling in countries or regions where you can't get other help. should provide basic live saving functions in deserts as well as in forests and the like. there will also be some medication in it, and some last resort stuff, like cyan kali and a modified signal pen, which shoots one .22 bullet. stuff like that, not the normal stuff you carry. it covers pretty much everything. i will list the stuff if you want to, but it'll take some time.

later, cheez

Richard what about the bernchmade 721? the 154cm blade is fairly stainless. its easy to mainatain a good edge on a strop or belt, and is lightweight, and has a great utility blade (clip point, bowie shape, ect.). I have the 910 you were thinking about and the 721 (I have it also) is a better choice for what your thinking of.

cyanide?????

Richard,

Sal Glesser compares test results of VG10 and ATS34 (Japanese 154CM) in this thread -

VG10 did better in the corrosion and CATRA tests. Since VG10 has some vanadium, it will take a sharper edge.

Given a choice I would pick VG10, although the two steels are close enough that I may not notice the difference. There are of course many other more important considerations to take into account when choosing a knife than any differences between the two steels.
