Knife for the GF

Another vote for the hideaway. Lean and mean, will surely look sexy on a girl too.

thanks a lot for all the help. we talked it over and it was made clear that it wasnt for SD at all so we decided on a little SAK for her. She chose a midnight manager II with a little LED and a pen a blade sissors and a bottle opener in a tranlusent blue. baby steps for now but a definate start since she decided she would like a knife. shes already talking about having it for a camping trip we are trying to plan for the spring. i think by then depending on how things go it will be time for a new present. here honey i got you a knife for the camping trip... we are also going to look into SD classes for her possibly taught at the school and i reinforced that she shouldnt be out alone. she has a good head on her she should be safe and who knows maybe she'll end up liking her new knife.

thanks again

I really support your decision--a knife for a tool and some good self-defense lessons. I'd be surprised if the uni doesn't have good lessons available, if not try a women's resource centre for a recommendation.
I was most impressed what they taught my partner, it would be more than enough for most purposes, and would likely send the agressor to the nearest emergency ward! They also train the reflexes and the mind set--and this is more important than the weapon.

Greg

A little Spyderco would be a good start for sure. For SD though, especialy if your GF has some training, a flashlight might be the best tool. Awareness is the most important thing in a SD situation, and a flashlight works for that as well as for temporarily blinding the assailant. I don't know many people who can fight effectively with a flashlight beam in they're eyes... and those who can are cops and black belts, not thugs and drunks. At the same time, you can pull out and flick on the flashlight if your actualy not sure whats going on, 9 times out of 10 threatening noises are just raccoons or drunks that don't even know your there.

I carry. I always carry. I often have a buck 501 or a leek in my pajama pocket.

My wife got very used to it, and finally, all on her own, she went to Walmart and bought herself a knife. She picked out a Gerber Gator (plain edged). She carried that in purse or car for a while, but found it a bit much for pockets. She next got a rainbow leek, but found the handle too slim to feel safe. She finally settled on a kershaw blackout, serrated; She never leaves home without it, and at home, she flips it open about once every pause between instant messages... (And, no, her long fingernails do not hinder her w/ the thumbstud, but the flipper on the leeks do).

YMMV
