Knife for wife?

I would like to purchase a knife for my wife. Purpose would be self defense only. Needs to be something that can be carried discreetly, but still able to be used to inflict damage if she were to be attacked. It needs to be a good solid knife, but she doesn't need a $200 knife buried at the bottom of her purse either.

I am drawing a blank on this one, so I am hoping for suggestions.

Seen some very interesting knife work done with a paring knife. Recall a young man, let's call him Rudy stagger into an ER where i was waiting, with a paring knife buried to the handle in his left chest crying that he was dying..an hour or so later he was storming out the door cursing the medical staff. Rudy was not having a good day.

If your wife would use a knife, she could learn to use a firearm which are better tools in my opinion. While I do not carry knives for SD I do carry an auto knife in addition a firearm - always stuff that needs cutting.

Here's a picture of one of my carry options;

Best.

A few weeks ago I got my girlfriend A Spyderco Native for our anniversary. I have to admit I never really had too much interest in one for myself, but it comes in pink, which fit her request of "just a pink knife." I did play around with it before I gave it to her, and it seemed pretty solid. Came incredibly sharp and locks up very tight. After I gave it to her she mentioned that it felt comfortable in her hand, and that it fit very nicely in her purse. You can find them for about $70

There are plenty of small and useful knives--my wife has a Spyderco Spin. But for self-defense, get her pepper spray. A knife will be useless by comparison.

In addition to a glock 23 I bought my wife a pink izula. She loves it because she doesn't have to worry about closing it and can just re-sheath it.

A karambit would work in the self defence role. If she plans on using it for other tasks as well then some of what the others stated would work better.

Knife for wife?

Call me twisted if you will, but I thought you were trying to trade your wife for a knife? I knew there were "knife Nuts" on this forum, but I thought surely he doesn't want a knife that bad. :D

1) Why is it that everyone assumes a woman would want a pink knife? If I bought my wife a pink knife, she'd stab me with it.
2) does your wife have any knife-based self defense training? If not, a folder is pointless and spending a chunk of cash on the knife is pointless. Buy her a couple grocery store steak knives to throw in her bag....they will work just as well if not better than anything else.

I'd just skip the whole thing and get her some pepper spray, and or SD lessons. She probably has a lot of objects in her purse right now that can do more than enough damage/pain to allow her to get away for a baddie, if she is shown/trained in how they can be used.

SD knife is a waste of time.

But she might like a nice knife to use! My wife uses hers all the time!

I agree with everyone saying get pepper spray, but in some states/countries (like mine) its not a matter of going to the store and buying it. Whereas this is the case for a knife. Not saying that this is Edbon's situation but just trying show all sides and keep discussion pointed ;) towards knives.

Granted, this is a knife discussion site and all, but I can't help but wonder if keeping the discussion towards knives might do more harm than good, when objects available anywhere and already in the typical purse (or pocket) like keys, hair brushes, or pens etc might be easier to use effectively than a knife with some brief training.

Maybe that's a topic for the folks over in PracTac.

No you're right, but if the guy wants to get his wife a knife to use for SD so she doesn't get her hair brush bloody then its his choice and we should suggest knives for him to get for her (says the guy who hasn't done that :D ). I would say get her the smallest, lightest knife with the most blade so she can have the largest reach possible when using the knife.

And potentially get her hurt by doing so? Not me. Her safety outweighs our knife obsessions.
