so im making a knife for a friend from a file. I have made plenty of knives in the past but never one from a file. my question to you is how in the world do I drill this steel?? I have cut it out with an angle grinder and shaped it but cant drill the holes for the brass rods to go through the handle. thanks for the help

Cobolt Drill bits or anneal the metal and make it soft.

I ended up buying a really nice set of Cobolt Drill bits and it's let me drill through just about everything. High quality drill bits make the world of difference.

stick the sharp end in water then heat the tang with an acetylene torch past a gray blue color, that should make it soft enough to drill

Sobalt is just a higher grade of HSS

In my experience you cannot drill a file with HSS drill bits.

single flute solid carbide drill will work, but are not cheap.
