Hi i was thinking to make a file knife.
But do you need to heat it upp to soften the metal?

And reheat and dipp in oil?
Why?

Could some one explain the steeps?

you would be better off doing your own research, start with youtube, but there are a lot of good backyard blacksmithing books to give you the basics. If you have specific questions, then some searching in the maintenance or knifemakers sub-forums.

Some things you will need to think about. Are you planning on hammer forging, or stock removal (grinding). What equipment do you have available, and what sort of work area?

first step is to get you to the correct section or knife making. General Knife Discussion is for talking about completed knives, not how to make them.

leave an old file in a fire for a night and she'll be soft enough to work.
Then harden, there's enough info here on that
