Knife Game

So Roger, are you supposed to make this knife all on your own, or is it okay to get direction from Dan?

I would say that it is understandable that he may need to "lean" on Dan some, and that is expected.
As long as the design and the majority of the execution is Roger's.
(Hear that, Dan?)
Considering what I saw in the 72 Hour bowie thread, I think I'm in trouble.
But, then again, it's a "Game", not a contest.
Just to see what three entirely different guys can come up with from the same materials, which are rather unique.

Great concept! This ought to get pretty interesting...

Dan, Rog, keep me informed about the 'when' of you're shindig... maybe I'll see if I can't swing by and check in on the progress.

...besides, someone has to supervise the two of you, or you'll both be completely nutrient deficient by midway through! Chocolate chip cookies don't qualify as ANY type of vegetable, Dan!:D:D

I guess I should also pioint out that this is NOT a race either! That's another aspect we haven't covered.
I've got three knife shows between now and November, which is a factor for me, and I'm sure Roger and Lin have their own logistics to handle.
We're in no hurry.

However!
Since Roger already has his big knifemaking photo debut on the 72 Hour bowie thread, I thought I might be the first to toss in s ome photos about where my knife making takes place.
I live out on the perimiter of a small town in Illinois - Watseka. I live back off the road a ways and pretty much have complete solitude. A divorce 20 years ago took care of that!
Be careful driving up the lane! Let the deer get out of the way.

More as time goes by.
Stay tuned!

Very cool idea and I do love that bakelite, so if any want to get rid of these knives?;):D:thumbup:Good luck to all.

Man, I am stoked to see how this all turns out! I have seen both the raw product (block of Bakelite) and finished product (knife handled with Bakelite) courtesy of Mr. Anderson. That is some cool stuff! Karl is the only guy I've ever seen with this stuff. Roger, I hope you document this in both picture and word... will only add to your knife writing fame.

Nice to get a glimpse of where you do your thing, Karl.

Don't be scared about the 72 Hr. bowie - that one was a team effort (three names will be stenciled on the ricasso), the result of which reflects a level of quality above anything I have done on my own. But it gives me something to shoot for.

Matt - I will let you know, bro.

Roger

What I really am interested to see is the hours put into each knife. It will be one thing to compare final product, another to compare the "work" that went into each.

I'm liking that phenolic Bakelight (You're right. Micarta wasn't the term in 1907)

Great project. The student aspirant is going to make the experienced maker's sweat bullets... :p

Staying posted...

Coop

We used it a lot back then and they called it Tuffnol mainly used as usulators in high voltage applications but something in it wasn`t user friendly so they changed the composition and called it phenolic known in knife circles as natural micarter.Well it looks like that stuff in the pic

No, it's not Tuffnol. If it was anything other than Bakelite it could be called Catalin, which is a phenol formaldehyde resin also made by the Bakelund Corporation in the same process as Bakelite minus the small wood fibers.
The pieces I'm using were from a mounting board backing for fuse boxes.

Hey Roger . I don't know what your plans are but you are more than welcome to come over and use my shop being as you're a whole 40 minutes down the road . I have 2 gas forges ,a hydraulic press and an air hammer , also 3anvils and a couple of swedge blocks, as well as a bunch of other neat toys . Paul.

Holy ! Thatsalottasteel.

Roger

PS - thanks for your kind offer, Paul. I may take you up on it for some of the final finishing. If I manage to forge out two usable blades, I'll definitely finish the second piece at a later date. Just got done re-tweeking my design sketch and I'm quite liking the knife.

Guys, I have been waiting for this thread, but would'nt you know ....I was waitin in the wrong place.:D

The selection of materials are quite varied. Wrought iron and Bakelite? This is going to take some imagination, but .....:)......I think it will be fun.

I have some things to get done and then I'll get started. I'll take pics and try to have a progress report ready when the time is right.

Karl, you have to stop thinking so much in the tub. Especially if it has anything to do with me. :o
Lin

It's still a ways off, as far as any SERIOUS progress is concerned, but I had to run up to Jerry Rados' place today to help with some "projects", so I took some "Game Steel" along with me to knock down for my "Game Blade".
See how I dress to run the big hammers? (There's a 200 pounder behind the 500!)
Sneakers and Hawaiian shirts!
