I have a freind that wants me to make knife for his brother in law in south africa he is very firm in wanting a elk antler handle do i need to worry about the handle shrink or cracking in th dryer climate what can i do to prevent this thanks chris

From what I've read on this here forum American Elk is the least moving antler to work with while moose and red stag is the most moving. still have it stabilized first especially if its for a customer.

You might want to check with customs to see if Elk can be exported, legally.

I use K & G about once a month.

Here is their price list and phone number -

Send us your wood to be custom stabilized. We are the original custom stabilizers for the knife industry. We custom stabilize wood, stag, ivory, horn, bone, oosic, etc. Why Stabilize? Stabilized woods have been impregnated with monomers and acrylics to produce a dimensionally stable wood. Some advantages of stabilized products are that they minimize or totally eliminate; shrinking, cracking, expanding and warping. Stabilized wood will not absorb water, impervious to oils, raised grain when sanded and they take a very high polish. Pricing is as follows:
1 - 5 lbs $13.00 lb
2 - 5 lbs $11.00 lb
5 + lbs $9.00 lb
Please include a list of the items you are sending in with your items along with a disclaimer stating that you will not hold K & G responsible if anything should happen during the process. Any questions please feel free to call 928-537-8877.

Thanks for that post Michael. I'd don't understand the breakdown though.

1-5 lbs $13 lb
2-5 lbs $11 lb

I get the, over 5 lbs $9 lb, but not the other two listings.

(BTW, I'll be getting back to that slipjoint for the malachite scales soon, have been swamped lately.)
