Knife Hoarder Thoughts

Its funny you ask that question as I was discussing it yesterday. I too have too many knives IMHO. But I have a hard time letting go of them. I started selling a few on here last week and may continue. I am approaching a minimalist stage, I fear, and I think having one maybe 2 good fixed blades, and a good folder should fit most peoples needs. Not wants, needs. So I tried to take inventory the other day and I cannot even find a box of SAKs that I had, that says something?
Since we are rambling here is how it happened. I sold all my Randalls back around 2005 about 6 of them, and bought a Buck 119, to replace them all. I also got a nice SOG folder (Spec Elite 1) and called it a day. However the Buck handle was/is slippery to the point of being dangerous, and I lost the SOG. So, the quest continued without getting rid of the Buck. Now I have a bunch of folders and fixed blades.
With me part of the attraction, I wont use the word addiction, is I see beauty in a well made knife. To me it's it an art form. To complicate matters, I have started making knives several months ago and as such have made a few more knives, and acquired a drill press, scroll saw, and a 1X30 belt sander.
Well, at least I know what people are getting for Christmas. BTW my Granny said if you gift someone a knife tape a penny to it or its bad luck, I don't subscribe to that superstition, but she was old school German. Anyone else heard this superstition before?

I have a collection, sets I’ve put together purposely to collect.

Then I have an accumulation of users. Knives I wanted to try out. I spent my youth lusting after a Buck 110. I finally got one and was happy with it for a long time.

Then wondered if I was missing out on something better? So I tried to replace the 110, but never found anything that suits me better.

The pile of users is kept, mostly for my kids. So they can experience different knives and find their perfect one.

We don’t have any brick and mortar knife stores. So my accumulation has been helpful to some people to choose what they should order for themselves.

In summary my knives fit in to 4 groups

My collection

My users

The accumulation

Kitchen knives.

Kind of sad I have a better selection of knives than any store within at least 200 miles.

Yes I have - I’ve heard that you should give a coin with a knife. Supposedly the original idea is that the person getting the knife gives the coin BACK to you so the friendship isn’t severed.

Good luck with your knife making! There are some great folks here to steer you along.

I forgot the part about returning the coin, thanks.

Do you ever mentally sandbox the notion of scrapping everything for just a couple knives that will fill every task / situation?
Where is the fun in that?
Nothing says that you can only collect expensive knives with fancy steels. You can collect what you want, even if it is for instance every model made by a low end manufacturer. You don't have to use what you collect, you don't have to focus your collection in any given area. You are the only person who can say if you have enough knives or too many knives, or maybe your spouse too. Collect the ones that you like, the collection is for your enjoyment.
I collect a variety of things, some that I intend to use and some that I don't. However everything in the collection is something that I like.
