The saving grace of budget stainless steel is easy sharpening. D2 was invented in 1918 and still kicks ass. I wish there was more D2 in Chinese knives. So what if it isn't stainless. I found out the hard way 9Cr18MoV scratches easily. Cru Wear and several other exotics are not stainless either. Plastic scales don't look luxurious, but if textured properly they provide lots of grip. Many high end fixed blades are made from low tech 1095.
Expensive folders are beautiful, but their cost discourages using them as tools. $10 box cutters cut boxes like crazy. Those in the trades use them extensively.
