Story or personal info about this knife Moose leg bone handle has not been altered. This is the bone as is feels comfortable in the hand and came off my dinner. I can supply pictures of the moose and where it lived. The guard is custom cast from bronze off a propeller that went up and down the Yukon River since the 1950’s
Price $350
My knives in general I do all my own work unless stated. Cut my own steel , shape blades one at a time freehand- no pattern. Do my own hardening and equalizing. If etched, freehand one of a kind no patterns, using acid. Been using and depending on knives since 1972 as a subsistence person in the remote interior of Alaska. Handle materials are often materials I find myself in my lifestyle – mammoth ivory, bone, horn, fossils etc. If not I know the source, and material has been personally selected. Guards are usually lost wax cast, my own carved designs, doing my own casting from free scrap metals gifted by our local barge line. Pins usually hand made tubing or copper heavy electrical wire or brazing rod. I make my own sheaths and stands. Often a story in some of it someplace- that helps make the knife one of a kind- personal.
Blade
Type steel D2 steel
Treated how I suppose no one will believe it….this is supposed to be air hardened steel but I was not pleased. I heated edge above cheery red- maybe 300 degrees past non magnetic, and quenched in oil. No warp no crack no problems- edge is super hard- (never seen D2 get this hard- it is not known for it’s hardness) file will not touch it, back is soft. Edge has sharpened a brass rod without chipping or dulling. I slammed it through both sides of a tin can and hammered in it in a vice and chipped the tip reground that so yes it might be prone to chip but it will take a lot to hurt this knife.
Dimensions overall 8.5 inches. Blade is 3 x 1.5x 1/16.
Artwork acid etching is steel wolf and leaves on one side, leaves on the other side brass fish as end pin custom cast guard see guard for description.
Handle Moose leg gone ‘as is’ no carving no alterations just sanded and polished. End cap is wild Dall sheep horn from Alaska sheep (friends subsistence hunt) pinned to leg bone fish end of pin.
Source leg bone off my dinner sheep horn from local sheep
Guard-pommel –pins- end cap wild Dall sheep horn guard is custom cast bronze from barge propeller, raven theme an eagle on one side cast to fit perfect over end of moose bone, Pin is copper with brass fish end
Display or sheath info comes with no sheath but One of the Jantz raw sheaths fits if interested. (from fitting should be done easy to do)
