You're right and above that is GySgt so I guess he was a Gunnery Sargeant in the Marines. If someone located the guy or his family I'd be happy to return it to them if they wanted it. It was found in the St Louis, MO area
He said he found the knife 30 years ago. No one said the knife was made 30 years ago. The knife could be much older than when he found it - possibly even WWII era.
As was previously mentioned the speculation is endless. It could be from any of a half dozen particular conflicts.... Or none at all. World War II seems unlikely considering the construction and it certainly doesn't look like any theater knife I've ever seen. (That means only that I haven't seen it) It could be from Vietnam... Or Granada ... Or the Bay of Pigs. It could have been carried in Nicauragua or San Diego. Why not? Until we have more info one speculation is as good as another. A service number means only that there is a service number. It doesn't mean it went war. It could have...or it could mean that Marine so and so made it in the base shop class. Speculation is fun and trying to guess the story is fun but let's not get carried away here until / if we get more information in hand.
