Knife I'm going to bring to Iraq

I would say this. Bring yourself a Leatherman, Tactical folder or whatever you prefer, and if you want a bigger knife I would say the Becker. I am currently in Iraq as a contractor, and I mostly use my folder, but I must say that my Leatherman came in handy in a few emergencies. Since we are not allowed to have a weapon (read rifle) I have a few fixed blade knives with me. I feel pretty safe, I just hope that I dont need to use them in that fashion, but if so I hate to be the poor bastard on the other end.

In case some of you are curious to what I actually have over here, well here goes. Leatherman of course, CRKT M16, Tom Brown Tracker and Scout (couldnt resist), MercWorx Equatorian. I feel pretty safe. And yes, they all can shave hair fairly easy.

I'm taking a SOG para-tool and as my folder well its going to be a cheap one because I've lost or has stolen to may good knives and I will not be upset the same hhappensto this one. I'm also getting a NG CCarbinerTool (We use ccarbineslike its cool.) I think I'm going for the Tac pig because I guess I want to take a chance with the knife hell I've taken the chance of going over there twice why not roll the dice on this? I also will have a back up blade in my sea bag. I'll be more then happy when I get back to tell all if its crap or if its a good knife.

I think it is totally in character to not have had a fighting knife (or lost the onhe you had or the one you had was lame) the other trips out. Marines don't make a lot of cash and while some will invest in a massive fighting knife for the looks it is usually the cooks or Admin types with the biggest knives on the block (and most tattoos for some reason.) While it is true that if you are using a knife on today's battlefield things have gone horrible wrong. Well that is often the case. Battlefields usually have lots of things going horribly wrong including separated from your squad or plt. ammo gone, frags gone, broken left hand (when you are left handed) and a gaping hole in the ass of your cammies, and a terrible head cold. Really tends to knock some of the bravado out of you when you are literally showing your ass :) Anyhow a good sensible fighting knife is a good thing to have.

Devil Dog if you haven't done the seabag drag to Iraq yet shoot me an email to jkothanek@comcast.net. I may be able to help you out on something.

Id have to agree with Dr. Thor. If your gonna spend time in the sandbox do not even bother bringing a folder. I've spent time in jordan,Kuwait and bahrain as an electrician attached to a construction battalion and that fine sand is murder on a folder. Even a good multitool is gonna get gummed up quite fast

If you just have to have a fixed Blade go with the BK-7.

Your best choice is a good, strong Multi Tool and a good tactical Folder with good steel like S30V.

Last trip I carried for the most part a Leatherman Wave and a Al Mar Sere 2000 in VG-10 steel. Next trip I am going to carry my new Leatherman Charge and a Spyderco Military.

Most of the Line Dogs from 10th MTN did not like the extra weight of a fixed blade on their gear and there is not a great deal of vegatation in Iraq to be hacking on.
