Hi guys,

After seeing some awesome Spyderco action from bearfacedkiller in a sadly locked thread (pics were the best part) it got me wondering: what are some knives you just had to have, after seeing only a photo or two? Oddly enough for me Spyderco springs to mind, thanksto some cool pics Sonnydaze posted of his stainless steel Sage 3. Although I still don't own one,it was love at first sight.

I know many of us prefer to get a feel for knives when possible. But what are some that so jumped out that you had to order right away? Did you of do you use it regularly? Pics welcome!

and the Rockstead Chi:

Unfortunately I never get to handle folders before buying, simply 'cos there are none where I live.
It's all an interweb thing for me. Makes me read and watch and think long and hard before buying.

Folders I knew I had to have include the Sage 4. From first seeing it I wanted one. Couldn't exactly put my finger on why, but I knew I really wanted one. However I prioritized others folders for a long time, thinking 'one day I will get a Sage 4'.
Then the moment I saw they were to be discontinued I bought one immediately.

I buy my knives to use. I won't buy anything I wont use. And yet, I haven't yet carried/used the Sage 4. It's just too darn nice. It's flawlessly made and I just love the thing, I admire and fondle it and feel it's action before wiping it down and returning it to the knife drawer.
I just worry that the first scratch on the bolsters or wood will ruin it's flawlessness. I tell myself I'm being silly, it's made for use, but I just haven't been able to break it in.
Maybe one day.

I've heard good things about Mr. Thorburn and wish I could handle a knife like that.

That Rockstead knife is.... extremely shiny. :)

Hi Cursum,

The vast majority of my purchases for this hobby are online. There are some options in my area but the "good" brick and mortar stores that used to carry a decent selection have moved away from knives.

I notice you are in NZ, can you at least by Svord Peasants in stores there, surely?

Honestly? Almost never. I see a picture of a knife, I get crazy overexcited, I squirrel away funds for when it finally comes out, I get on Bladeforums and rant about how it's a MUST BUY for me, then I talk myself out of it. Happens to me all the time. Benchmade Crooked River is the latest victim. It's a gorgeous knife that looks very functional, but I rethought my collection and my philosophy and it didn't have a spot. Maybe someday.

The big exception is the White River Jerry Fisk Sendero Classic. That's one that I literally have my all my ducks in a row to get and I WILL be picking one up. Just need them to come in stock somewhere.

Must say I got twice luckified. Got the knife, and a short while later, got to meet and spend lots of time with the creator, John Doyle. This one is his "Gambler's Hideaway Bowie."

My collection has evolved and pared back over the years, with sales and various giveaways. Ironically, mostly toward a lot of cheaper options and only a couple mid-range and one high end one, unlike how most members here would pare back their collection, I assume. I found myself buying and not using, worrying instead of enjoying, and the hobby was no fun. Now that I have a few good ones and mostly ones I "don't worry about" so to speak I'm enjoying things much more, don't know why.

That Crooked River looks great, but its' one that looks almost too good to use which is what stops me, I try to only buy what I know will get pocket time.

The way the colors of that knife work with each other is magnificent.

The Sunfish.

I had to have one so I started with this reproduction. I couldn’t fine a vintage one that I liked.

I haven’t looked for a while. Probably going to be pricy.

When I find a real one, that was carried by a workman back in the day, in dark tobacco brown or black buffallo horn I will know I died and went to heaven.

Pretty much anything from rockstead makes me pick my jaw up off the floor. Blues bender is killing me. He posts that knife porn all the time.

I don't yet own one of them, but I just learned of the classic Christy knife, and after googling them and seeing the 20$ price tag on their site am now convinced that I must have one.

Certainly a gorgeous knife. Only way to improve it would be a mellowing and deepening of the wood as you use it more and more....
