Knife in freezer?

I talk to my friend who has some enginering degree in machinery. So he sad that austenit is actually good for blade and make it harder, only problem is britlennes, but in bulat it is not a case because of tough microstructure.

Is it correct? May be I should not try to change austenit to martencite?

Thanks, Vassili.

I believe SS has more benafits from super cold..then does the simple steels

just how much seems to be the thing..

Sorry I have taken this time to answer. I love SS. I believe that it really benefits from correct cryogenic treatment. There are many people who decry Cryo as a marketing myth. No surprise, as it is far easier to horse up that carbon steels and that is what people are exposed to. Guys dip it in nitrogen or dry ice and it is labled 'cryo' much in the way that one strike from a hammer = forged and then dropped off the bench = drop forged.

It is a process and the how is everything.

I have been working with the variables you describe in this thread for over 35 years, thought I had the answer a few times but I was wrong. Today I have more questions than answers.

Dont be such a damned jackass Mike.

This is such a minor issue to leave the forums.

We've had too many GOOD knifemakers leave over stupid crap like this and it's just sad.

Lord knows I've made few folks cry with my bitter tongue and have felt bad enough later to personally e-mail and get it straight.

I know life is precious and sometimes we feel like our efforts here arent appreciated , but I for one have always appreciated your words and wish you would reconsider coming back.

Come back and play from one old jackass to another,

Mark

Their heat treated and tempered tools broke because of the below zero temperature in the arctic. If the tools had been periodically heated to 2 or 3 hundred degrees they probably wouldn't have broken.
The other day I was jackhammering into some very solid concrete when the jack hammer bit got stuck.
I unconnected the jackhammer from the bit and reached for a small hand hammer to tap the bit and loosen it from the concrete.

I hit the stuck bit with a small, almost glancing blow, only to have the bit snap right in half.
I picked up the broken section and found that it was still way too hot to hold.

On The other hand..
Last winter during a very cold spell where the temperature dropped below -20 I went out to the shop to get something and I i walked past my work bench I knocked off a handle to a window of one of the John Deere . The metal handle hit the floor and snapped.
I told my co-workers and everyone said that the steel had snapped due to the cold.

Hi, Mark!

Hope you're doing well getting the new digs in order and aren't damaging that back further. I know it has to be hurting almost constantly. :( Good luck with everything ahead of you!

Thanks for the kind words! Both versions! :D I didn't leave because of what I said on this thread, to be accurate. It's a bit more complicated than that. It was a growing dissatisfaction that simply reached a head that day. It is not worth airing in public and creating further tension.

When I felt a need to apologize in the past, I did so publicly so all would know my shame, and would again were I to feel the need. Embarassment or feeling bad is not the issue why I quit posting. I take my lumps as I deserve.

I still frequent the forum daily to read, and hopefully learn something new. Non-participation has proven to be good for me. I hope you will understand.

I wish you and everyone here well.

Respectfully,
Old Jackass fitzo.......
