Okay, here is the "official" registration thread for KITH05. Not all of the details are worked out yet, so we'll take this one step at a time. The known details are as follows, then the rules for how to register and who can, then the stuff that still needs to be decided:

Details
KITH is a trade in which knifemakers can trade a knife to someone else, randomly. Therefore, you give a knife and get a knife. The general "rule" is to follow the criteria and sennd your knife by the due date. That's it! It's been a lot of fun in the past. The idea is to do your best work within the confines of the criteria, or submit something that is really different for your style (i.e. someone who uses only natural materials and forging doing a stock removal tactical knife, or vice versa, etc).

How to register
To register, you have to do two things. Reply to this thread so everyone knows who all is in, and email me the following information at kith2005@agocschiropractic.com:

1) Put "KITH2005" as the subject line
2) I need Real Name, Bladeforums Name, mailing address, email address to use (there will be a few group emails). In the past we've had international participants and I don't think we've ever run into problems, so I'd like to keep this open for everyone.
3) Please respond to this thread and send your email by November 1, 2004. After that, registration will be closed.

Criteria, Due Dates, Rules, Etc
Criteria have yet to be set. We usually set some sort of arbitrary dollar amount. Any ideas on that? Otherwise, a knife (although I suspect most would accept a tomahawk or something else with an edge, or even a custom built flashlight or gadget along those lines, although that can be another undecided thing). Knives must be fully functional and usable and have a sheath, display box or stand, or something along those lines.

Due date: a lot of folks are looking at March, so let's say March 19, 2005, which is my birthday? It's gotta be sometime, so it may as well be then! Sometimes issues come up and you may be a little late, which is fine as long as you email me to let me know and email the person who is to receive your knife so they know. I'd prefer that people not send their knives too early (like if you finish in December, hold onto it until around the due date).

I've seen great knives from newbies, and everyone has to start somewhere, so I say as long as you can meet whatever criteria that we set forth that you can participate.

Undecided details
Knife value?

Type of entries allowed. Knives only, or can we include custom built lights and tomahawks and that sort of thing?

So, respond to this and email me and you're in.

I am already looking forward to this. On the "undecided" I would not mind haveing a Hawk or a custom flashlight.

Seeing this is mostly for fun. Let's not worry too much about setting standards on what is made. I would like to be able to make a hawk or a knife if noone objects. I'd be tickled with whatever I got. One thing that kinda turned me off about other ITH events is previewing what was in the hat before drawing. I would rather be surprised at what is in the hat and see what people draw after they recieve it. I dont really know how to affix a $ value on what will be made.

Mark, what I've done with this BFC event is make the list, set it to order itself up randomly, then go from there. I'm all for setting no value and no rules on what goes in (as long as it's handmade and tool-ish in nature...I don't need any more doilies), but in the past there has been some concern from seasoned makers that they'll make something nice and get something that belongs in the Ugly Knife Contest thread. It's a legitimate concern. Of course, the point of this is to GIVE something nice to someone, and if everyone keeps this in mind everyone should be reasonably happy with what they get.

FWIW, my Hotmail hasn't necessarily been working all that hot. I haven't received any registration email from anyone yet, so maybe try this instead:

I am kind of like you MArk......I hate to be a sour puss but I'd be afraid of working an ernest 15 hrs and getting back a 5 hr knife.....

what if we sent out what we have laying around no one wants to finish but is still a usable blade. :D That would turn up some interesting stuff :D :D

We would have to finish the knife though.

I am interested in seeing where this will go.

I'm not quite sure where anything I said implied I wouldnt be happy with what I got. What I'm saying is that I would prefer that this be a blind drawing. I dont want to see what folks made until after the drawing is done. Some people might see what others have made and either think their entry isnt good enough, or see others entries and decide they dont want to take the chance of drawing "crap".

oh...I see. I just expected that it would be a surprise drawing. Dont show the stuff for sure! Wheres the fun in that?

Okay, guys, let's clear some things up. This is the 3rd time we've done this and I've never heard a bad thing about it. No one knows what they're getting until they get it unless someone breaks out and posts the knife they finished out of sheer excitement. You know who you're sending a knife to and who you're getting one from and that's it.

As far as value goes, the last two years we did set an arbitrary value and most people seemed to stick within those confines. But, I suppose if you want to make a $13,000 knife and give it to someone, that's cool. At the same time if you want to put a handle on an old dog **** from the yard and send it to someone, I guess you'll get beat up pretty badly in public here. I'm all for trying "anything goes" this year, and if you're worried about what you're going to get then I guess this year isn't your year. That said, if the majority DOES want to name a number value range, we can do that, too.

OK to be blunt and out of the box...

I think it ran pretty good last year.
I believe the pictures were not shown until the knife was delivered Right? still In think it went OK.

I think the part,,,
that someone could get a first time knife from someone
could be bothering some of the guys. and that itself could bring down the quality of work from some of the seasoned guys, I'm hope not but....

I think the younger makers (in terms of experience) just has to be sure
they can make a
realistic working Knife and sheath combo valued at a saleable $150.00 or above.
because that is the terms of this KITH,

I'd hate to see higher end makers (and I'm sure it's why more makers
don't join in) drop out or don't come back..

I'm in again this year, and will be happy with what is by chance..

I typed this while you posted yours Steve.

prices are ok with me as to what is set by the majority :)
but
if I get a POS I'm going to pick it a part with my bare teeth
and and :D just kidding,, :D guys do your best and I hope we all can learn from each other, that's why I'm in :D

Again, there's always the possibility of tiering the drawing, too. One exchange for anything goes and one exchange for $150-$200 or whatever.

To be clear, though, as of this moment, NO VALUE has been set forth, so that's something that needs to be debated between now and November 1 when registration happens. I think the chance that someone will submit something terrible is slim.

So how does tiering work? all say $200 stuff goes in one hat and all $500 goes in another? That might be a good solution I guess.

FWIW,

I participated two years ago. I got a J. Neilson knife and was just tickled pink. J. and I have become swell cyber-pals and that's even more important to me. Being very new I tried my darnedest and I think it came out ok. At least the new owner was nice about it.

Also, I was doing the web site updates for it with Chris Crawford. However, my FTP stuff went belly up and I couldn't get anything to work for months! Got most of the Photos uploaded, but never everything (hope that didn't make any enemies!).

All in all I think it was fun. Experienced makers know they might get a newbie knife going into it, but still join in. New makers, want to get stretched because their blade might be going to a pro. Everyone knows upfront and like Steve said, I've never heard a complaint.

I want to participate this year, but don't know if I can promise the time.

Steve

I didnt mean to sour thangs up fellas.........
