I just discovered that one of my little fixed blades has a tang that is magnetic. Blade seems to be neutral. Is this even possible? Just half of the steel is magnetic? And why!

Any thoughts or wisdom appreciated.

Thanks

Eric

It depends on the knife. If the knife has a lanyard hole and a steel tube inserted that could be it. There could be hidden pins under the handles. As for magnetism on just part of the blade? Im not entirely sure what is possible but I have had crazier stuff happen.

Did you put the knife against a magnet for a bit at some point? I tend to keep my knives on a magnetic strip mounted to the wall, and they are magnetic after being stored there.

Well hot diggity dang if you didn't just Nail It!

This knife has two steel tubes in it and that is what is doing it. I was just probing around the tang spine - and then read your post.

Thanks - that was really tripping me out.

Eric

ps: Here is the knife in question

The blades on my Buck knives are magnetic. I was told they get magnetized during the manufacturing process due to the blade coming in contact with magnets along the way.

Here they are up against a wall.

The question is: how to demagnetize them if you want 😁

Using a paper clip I just determined that my Ontario Rat-1 and Utilitac (both AUS-8) are magnetic but none of my other knives are.

Magger/Demagger made by Master Magnetics, PN 07524, About $4 at your local hardware store. Will handle about a 1 inch blade. Plastic coated, won't scratch your steel

That is a comfy looking piece, Snippy. Who made it?
