I am interestsd in buying a knife kit or blade blank so I can have a project to work on. I was thinking about one of Rob Simonich's Cetan kits, but from what I understan, it is going to be awhile before he has them available again.
I was also looking at Atlanta Cutlery's offrings, but on closer inspection the catalog staes the Rockwell test is 44-50. Way too soft for me.
Any ideas, guys?
Thanks.

Both Mel Sorg(Madpoet) and Alan Folts make some of their knifes available as kits. If you are just getting started, consider getting some of the knife supply catalogues(Jantz, Texas...&c.). They all carry pre-made blades at reasonable prices. Try looking at some of the Russell style blades, good steel under $10

Don't forget to pay your taxes...they eventually become my knives:)

You can see three kit blades I've finished that are of mel's creation. Actuyally he made them from my drawings, but his knives are all freehand, so they are all custom, more or less. Great guy to work with. I also have a pic of a Cetan Tanto kit I did, so take a look at that, too. I vouch highly for Mel and Rob.

www.knifesupplies.com will have a series of vast selection of knife kits available in about 2-3 weeks. Everything from folders to fixed blades. A current small selection is up. The majority of them are being photographed, then we just have to put them on the web.

We also supply India Stag, Buffalo Horn, Mother of Pearl, Damascus & many other items.

RCC

Jantz and J&G Sales (both have web sites as I recall) have a slug of kits as well as very rapid response time.
