im looking into making my first knife...well not making all of it. im buying a custom made blade from two finger knife co. out of idaho falls, Id, but am kind of at a wits end as what kind of handle material to use. im pushing towards micarta, maybe canvas or possibly making my own burlap by modifying joel boldens recipe of sorts and doing that. but i am at a loss. I really like the knifekit.com's designer canvas micarta designs but dont want to buy cheap shite. soo what do you guys think.... should i make my own via modification of joel boldens recipe or buy the great looking designer micarta from knifekits.com... i can make my own decisions about things, but like i said i am new and dont know how hard it is to make burlap micarta.

thanks,

the FNG

I haven't been disappointed with any of the standard micarta I've bought from knifekits.com or TKS. There are also folks like FOD/aka ShadeTreeComposites here on the forum that make and sell quality stuff, often "designer", made from non-standard materials. FOD's "glow in the dark" micarta is kick-butt.

FWIW, I prefer to buy specialty materials from folks here in the supplies/tools forum. They post what they have ready for immediate shipment and I haven't had a single problem yet.

I've had a lot of problems ordering from online retailers who list stuff on their website, but don't have it in stock, and don't update their sites to reflect what they actually have... I've ordered from some places, waited 3 weeks and finally got an e-mail saying, "Oh, can we backorder that for you and ship in 6 months or so?" "Uhh... no thanks." USAknifemaker is an exception to that; I've been very pleased every time I've ordered from them. Those folks are on top of their game and will let you know within days, sometimes hours, if what you want is in stock and ready to go.

I doubt it's worthwhile to make your own unless you're going to make a bunch, or you're looking for a specific custom pattern. Of course, if you just plain want to make your own, more power to ya! There are several guys around here who do that and will give you tips.

Micarta is a trade name, if they don't call it phenolic sheet it's probably name brand material. I've never seen any complaints about the stuff you're speaking of, other supply houses have the same material.
