I was at REI the other day looking at some of the new knives that had come. I overheard one of the employees talking to a customer who was looking for "an amazingly dependable" knife. The employee went to the shelf and picked up 3 of bear grylls knives and showed them to the customer saying, " these are some of the highest quality knives on the market." I died a little inside. The employee had a nametag with the label "cutlery expert" on it. The customer then looked at the mini grip in the display case and I thought there was still hope. But of course, I was disappointed yet again. The employee said " those knives are way too expensive and not nearly as durable and dependable as these gerbers. I had to interject, "sir, I would highly recommend going with the one in the display case." the employee then yelled at me for being "disrespectful" and for thinking I knew what I was talking about. Oh the irony.

What an idiot. Why would this failure of an employee advise the customer away from buying the more expensive quality item, anyway? You might want to submit a comment for his superiors.

Maybe REI makes more profit on the BG knives, so the "company line" is to sell them. Dependable knife? Bear Grylls. Knife that stays sharp for as long as possible? Bear Grylls. Respectable looking folder that would be appropriate for a young executive? Bear Grylls, of course!

Maybe I'm just being cynical.

You find this species of douchenozzle in gunstores, also.
You did the right thing by speaking up-think of how you'd feel if you wouldve said nothing...

Nothing wrong with the knife Jay...however, about the TacVest and Body Armor...

Easily concealed under this -

Never thought about it Rdog...might need to check out the REI out here...

Edited to add...

Something to do with his show being cancelled? Granted, it was back in March...any ideas?

Wonder if they been told to push these, if the shows not on going to be prime-time anymore they might not prove to be so popular and they need to get rid of 'em asap?

Anytime I see a name tag with expert on it in any kind of store I know not to listen to the person wearing it. I see those kind of employees at lots of stores. And it's not limited to guns and knives.

What if my nametag says "Bullsh*t Expert"??

I was only in an REI store once. Didn't like it. Got a weird vibe. Seems they market to urban do gooders who are looking for a one time outdoor experience so that they can video and post it. Hey look at me loving the environment. Just my $0.02.

Did you elaborate on why your suggestion was better? As soon as someone says I'm disrespectful, I do get that way

Unfortunately, that was my first reaction. Buying a knife in an REI store? How about blowing your hard-earned cash on on the T-shirt with "rube" on the front? Not that they don't carry some quality merchandise, they're just quite "proud" of it!

I got to handle a fixed blade BG knife, I liked the sheath the most, flint comes in the handle and threw sparks like crazy. The sheath also folded out to have a hidden sharpener. Blade had some good weight to it. I almost wanted one.

With this in mind, the clerk being rude to you is another story, and something I would not put up with. I've been kicked out of Dicks before for something simular to what you did, but it was ammo related. If a clerk can't handle a recommendation from another customer then they need to lighten up a bit. You were completely right, the BM is a much better knife.

Personally I would have made a bigger scene. It gives me a little satisfaction. My Mom used to give us a chance to leave the scene if we didn't want to be embarrased. We always stayed to watch the show!
