Knife Lanyard Usage

I've always used my lanyards in a funny way, and now I finally see that someone else does it. Zorrro sent in the photos of his lanyard in use to Klippe.

You put it over your thumb, wrap it behind your hand, and then grip the knife. Knife can't go in either direction.

Article doesn't really say anymore, but here's the link anyway for those so inclined:

Proper Way to Use a Knife Lanyard

Anyone else do this?

That is how I use a lanyard on a chopper like a machete. Picked it up from John "Lofty" Wiseman.
You can see it here in Peru.

hey, bear: what was the most memorable highlight of your Peru trip? Did you post a thread in the past i can find? (sorry, don't want to hijack this thread).

I'd be interested to see how people use there lanyards or how many people actually have one. I have never had a knife with a lanyard, nor have I ever used one. I don't know, I've just never had a problem with my hand slipping around on my knife when cutting. Are there any other uses for one?

i put a lanyard on my machete, and wear it like in cando's original post. it is good because it lets me have a nice relaxed grip on my machete when hacking light brush, and keeps it in my hand when chopping sticks.

i find that i have to keep a very tight grip when chopping wood though so the lanyard doesn't help much there. the vibrations of a loose grip kill me.

the only other lanyard i have on a knife is on my water knife (a cheap modified bait knife) and i put one on my SAK when i take it over water with me.

That's a lot like how they used to use lanyards on a police truncheon. Adds an extra point for imparting force to a blow, which might help in chopping wood.

I think I've read somewhere about alternate lanyard attachments, that didn't attach to the knife handle at the end opposite the blade, but rather at the end adjacent to the blade. I think the idea may have been that it's safer that way, but I have trouble understanding how that would be. Anyone know?

On some smaller blades that I carry fishing the lanyard is simply a small loop. I use this loop the same way the loop on the Marbles style trout and bird knife was designed to be used. It's convenient once you get used to letting the knife dangle while being sure you don't cut yourself.

I don't want to fill my pockets with lanyards (i put a lanyard on everything, keys, flashlight, emergency lighter...) and the knife lanyard has not to be longer than the handle:

Excellent, thanks!

I just updated the article. dantzk8, I included the photos of your folder; let me know if this isn't OK or you want to be credited in another way.

CanDo, you gotta come hang out with us at the CT Wilderness Gathering! it's an easy trip, and you could get lots of good info and pics for Klippe!

Brian,

Thanks for the invitation. Though I'd love to come, I'm in a sort of unique situation and I don't think I'll be able to. I'll see if there's a way, but probably not. It looks like a lot of fun; enjoy!
