Knife Law Op-Ed In The NYTimes Today

Look who runs NY city. Are you surprised? I'd never ever live in that State. I'm in California and actually, beside the carrying of autos over 2" in length which is moronic in and of itself, our carry laws are fairly decent, even in the city of Los Angeles even though I never go there unless I have a reason.

The last time I was in NYC, I only carried a Ladybug and a keychain SAK. I had heard enough stories about NYC political car not to take a chance. I am glad I live in a place where no one gives a second look at a pocket clip.

It would be a mistake to think that a NYC cop could not wrist flick open a Ladybug.

Oh well, I haven't been back since 2009, so I think I am pretty safe here in the lower Midwest. This a good example of unintended consequences of protests against stop and frisk and protests by groups like Black Lives Matter, has helped expose the NYCPD and prosecutors' abuse of pocket knife laws. Reducing knife prosecutions helps all people, not just folks who look like me or who live in the inner city. It is a good example of how people often have more in common than they realize.

That's all I will share on politics, I post here to talk knives!;)

This. The NYT editorial pages, as everyone knows, are known to be liberal in mindset. And their editorials often support gun control in various forms. To see them espouse such a rational view on knife possession is very refreshing and heartening.

Well, they only deserve a little bit of credit. After all, one, it's extreme common sense. Two, the only reason they picked up on it is because of the law enforcement angle. With the Fishwrap of Record, if it makes cops look bad or it might have a disparate impact on minorities, it's automatically news. There's an old joke about how when the world ends, the NYT's above-the-fold headline will be "Apocalypse Ends Life as We Know It: Women, Minorities Hardest Hit." And three, they still swallow without question the idea that a knife you can open with one hand is more dangerous in some way.
