I will be travelling to China, Shanghai & Xi'an, in a few days. I know it may be a long-shot but I was hoping that someone would be able to let me know what is & is not allowed. TIA.

I would check with the embassy or, if there is one in your city, a consul general's office. Sometimes it is also useful to check with a country's tourism bureau. Another suggestion is a country's economic development office. If you say you are going over on a large business project, that office may be willing to do some leg work for you.

A friend of mine did some similar research on Russia and it wasn't easy to get accurate information. The most useful info he got came from Russian citizens working in the U.S. (bankers, traders, etc.). They gave him advice on what he was likely to encounter in terms of street enforcement.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, I tried most of those sources with no luck. My contact at the company I will be visiting seemed very surprised at the question but promised to find out what she could. I'll probably go the cautious route & just include something like a small SAK in my checked luggage.

traveled to China and 10 other Asian counties for 2 month's with a SAK,Leatherman Supertool and Wegner Clipit.Keep them low profile just use the SAK in public ,only once did a LEO check and that was in Hong Kong Air Port and that was the SAK in my Carry on. ;) Brian you can check www.ih2000.net/ira/ira.htm it's a massive Police site with international link's just back from looking at it, you may be able to find what your looking for or check www,refdesk.com

Thanks for the link & for sharing your experience, akabu. I had a layover in Hong Kong a few years back en route to Singapore. This was, of course, before the current hysteria about knives. I don't recall exactly what I had with me but my briefcase would have typically contained a multitool & 3" class folder along with a Lady Bug on my keys. A Cricket or similar would have been carried in my pocket as a money clip. Nothing even got a second glance.

Thanks for the suggestion, medusa. I'll try it.
