I will be travelling to Italy in the next couple of months and would like to know if anyone has knowledge on the knife laws in this country?

If you are allowed a folder?
What Length is allowed?
In pocket or clipped to pocket (concealed or exposed)?

If anyone has any experience of can help I would be grateful

Thank you

I've been to Italy more than a few times. I find it amazing that so many guys try to sell you switchblades at all the tourist spots, right in front of the Carabinieri.

Except for the airport and The Vatican, I can't remember ever going through a metal detector.

That said, recently the gladiator at the Coliseum was arrested for carrying a sword.

I really don't know for sure, I was there about 5 years ago and just carried a SAK, and had no problems. I can't remember if I brought it to the Vatican though.

I just did a quick google search, and in a couple places it popped up that you needed to have a reason to carry a knife. As such I would bring a SAK or an opinel or perhaps buy something local there and carry it in your pocket and if asked you're carrying it to cut the fruit that you're going to buy for lunch or some similar excuse. It's probably going to be difficult to justify carrying a locking tactical folder though.

Wikipedia tells me that pepper spray is legal in Italy, so maybe that would be a good solution for SD.

EDIT: Maybe try a post in the "European Knife Community" board, someone there could probably help you.

Thanks for the responses. Would size matter as much. For example would a Strider PT cause any alarm? How about a Microtech Assailant?

Thanks again for the help.

Automatics are entirely prohibited for carry I believe, although plenty of natives ignore this.
I have not visited since the early 90's, but expect the same holds true that the Carabinieri are not to be trifled with.
