knife length to accompany a tomahawk

For utility sake.

A hawk typically has a very short edge, there's uses for a long knife beyond that of a weapomn, such as butchering, use as a drawknife, "machete" type uses, etc.

True. Pluss in a fighting situation I would think that the longer blade would work better for blocking/ parying as well as giving you the option of more reach and hacking ability with your knife hand.

i like one of my bowies best like a Hells Belle. This one has a 11" blade and balances at the choil area. It isn't heavy.

I love that bowie! I wish they were easier to come by these days haha!

I think you need to mod up a hawk to compliment that beauty. Maybe stain the haft a matching color and do a matching triangular pattern with some apolstery tacks.

Sounds cool. :)

....I find the CS Larado to be very fast and light in the hand.

Something like a Bagwell Hells Bell would be a great compliment to a fighting hawk too, I think.
Stunning!

That's a cool idea. Or i could get Steve to make me a nice damascus hawk to match it:p

I carry my knife and hawk as part of my operational gear. The knife and hawk are from Daniel Winkler, Winkler Knives II line. My purpose for carrying my hawk is for CQC situations and the short length of the handle on the R & D Hawk is perfect for just that purpose. The grates fighting hatchet I have ever seen... The Knife is a Winkler Knives II Belt knives, it’s a similar version of the ones he makes for Navy Special Warfare personnel.
The shorter size on the knife and hawk means more free movement in closed spaces like inside buildings and cars.

Mr. Winkler makes the best knives and hawks in my humble opinion. And he’s a great person to deal whit.

I've read somewhere that mountain men had a matched set of hawk and knife that had the same rotation for throwing.

So the Tru-Bal (or CS Perfect Balance) would be a good companion for most hawks.

I just have a Mora Classic #2 as a companion to my Trail Hawk. It has a sheath I made for it that can attach to my Trail Hawk sheath.

The first tomahawk image in this thread is a Cold Steel Rifleman's Hawk.

The usual combo I take out into the woods are these:

I'm quite partial to a 24" Equinox Gen1 Mk1 Trail Hawk and the Ka-Bar USMC (full sized) with stacked leather handle. I've also been known to carry an 18" Equinox Gen1 Mk5 Trail Hawk and Fiskars M95 or some combination of the four items above.

Really, it depends on what I want to accomplish, and my mood. With these tools, it's a no-lose situation!

JOBEN........you got it bud, diversity... but "just for conversation" ill say this, if you plan to WORK, you know darn well, carrying a bowe ( or something you can bang with the butt or spine end of the hawk) will do alot for the energy used. if your going into knife fight though, just remember, even the best fighters shouldnt bet more than 50/50 on winning...but if your still fighting, bring the big one

There's an old saying, "what a ding Dong and brings a knife to a gun fight", anyhow I was going to get myself a Nessmuk wood handle knife and a double bladed pocket knife to go with my new 2Hawks Voyager, and I still might, but the new knife I just got from the Swamp Rat Custom Shop is working out great, Mors Kochanski suggested a knife to be strong in his book, that stuck with me ( heh heh heh ), I wanted a 6" Swamp Rat Knife but the only one was the Rodent 6 which I didn't like that tactical look and it was a little too thick to slice with, but I contacted Trissy up and she told me I can have it thinned down and have the top gaurd taken off and now it look's like a beefy Ratmandu on steriods it came out great, they do great work at Swamp Rat, Trissy also really helped, not that a Ratmandu wouldn't make a good combo with my Hawk or even my Trapper Double Bit Hatchet which is a great tool in its own but like the gentleman said before it's a personal p reference, actually I can see myself use the Rodent 9 or my Rodent 4 with either hawk or double bit hatchet, but if you foresee a fight and you know you can't walk away, bring a gun.

Thanx Mr. Wolf 1989 that's a nice combo, I have the Bk-5 and I have the BK-15 and I still have the Tan handles great idea, I thought of long blades and I just can't imagine me using my Hawk with my Rodent Rucki but maybe some can use that size knife with a Hawk, if I'm going lite then my Rodent 5 and my Rodent 3 is a good combo too, I don't just have Swamp Rat's I have a nice stable of Busse's and others, but my newest Busse the N.M.F.S.H. or my A.S.H.B.M.LE

Would be a bit heavy for me, sorry about the error and not completing one post but for what I use my knives for and that's bush work a lighter knife seems most practical.

I have a Combat Shiv (8" of CPM 3V) from Nathan Carothers (here on BF) that makes for an excellent partner to one of my hawks.

" What is a good blade length to accompany the tomahawk when being used together? Is there a formula or anything?"

Native Americans used this formula for their knife to hawk ratios. The early 1700 French fur traders taught it to them when they gave them trade hawks for their furs.
