Knife lost (stolen) in the mail - I'm bummed

Hi All,

I bought a Spyderco Lil Temperance trailing point from DiscountKnives.com on 6/18/02. This is a company I've bought from several times in the past. The guy who runs it is named Brian. They've always had great prices and prompt shipping. Their shipping method is USPS Priority Mail (no insurance or delivery confirmation). The knife was coming from Maryland (I think) to Los Angeles.

On 6/26 I e-mailed Brian and told him I had not received the knife. He replied that my knife was shipped on 6/19/02, one day after I ordered it. I believe him.

But now it's 7/3 and no knife! My local post office said that any Priority Mail that's taken so long will probably never arrive. Brian ships the knives with a return address that indicates it's a business, but nowhere on the box does it say the word "knife."

My mail receiving area is semi-secure, but my mail carrier always puts boxes right in front of my door, which is very secure. In years of ordering things USPS Priority Mail, I've never had something not arrive.

I e-mailed Brian again on 7/1 and told him I never got the knife, and asked him how he wanted to proceed. As of yesterday, the Temperance trailing point was not listed on his web site, so that means it's out of stock. I have not heard back from him. I can always dispute the charge with my credit card company, so I'm not worried about the $$$, ultimately.

I do believe Brian and would still give DiscountKnives.com a strong recommendation. I am just really bummed I got excited about this knife and now there's no knife in sight.

Do any of you think I might still receive it, that it's really lost in the mail? Has anyone had a similar experience?

Regards,

Johnny

Yep, I have had one package lost when shipping USPS...It was a $130 knife, and I had to eat the loss because I did not insure it...it sucked badly, as I really really needed the money.

Hopefully Brian will make sure it all gets straightened.

Hi All,

Has anyone had a similar experience?

I had the same experience with Brian. The package got lost, he told me he would send some paperwork for me to fill out (so he could claim the insurance) but the forms never arrived, Brian stopped responding to my e-mails so after about 2 months I called my bank and got the money back (I paid with my bank VISA card).

David

I am just glad I did not send check or MO.

[edited] oh and I told him to INSURE the package.

Well now I'm really glad I posted this. Thank you to Mike and Les for responding, and especially to David. Your experience with this lets me know how to handle my own situation. I will give Brian a few days to reverse the charges, and if there's no response I'll call my bank and dispute them.

I would not be surprised if a local post office employee at his end knows the nature of what's in the boxes, and has been stealing them. It's a real shame, because Brian had always done a great job for me. I was a very satisfied customer.

And I agree - I'm glad I have the protection of buying by credit card!

I paid for a GMT Omega on Dec 6th, it arrived Jan 6th!!! :(
from a personal party whom I did not know but had a great rep. Postmark was as it was supposed to be. It will probably show up.

I just had USPS take 11 days to deliver priority air. Here's what you can do, call the USPS 800 number and tell them what happened, they will probably assign a case number. I don't know how much this will help, but it certainly feels better than waiting. You should receive a follow up call from them. The bad news is that you have to wait 30 days to file for insurance. The other bad news is that Priority mail isn't guaranteed to arrive in any set amount of time (or ever, I guess). Other than that, have patience, it may yet arrive.

Hope that helps

Give it some time...Geraldo's right about the 30 day thing. They don't care about it until it hasn't shown up for at least 30 days . Read this about the post office debacle that I went through. If Brian did send it (I have dealt with Brian once before with no problem) then it still could show up. I have had things take a really long time, but never has anything not shown up. Hope it works out--I know exactly what you are going through.

JLO,
looking at their ordering page, you had a choice of using more than one method of delivery. http://www.discountknives.com/ordering/Ordering.htm

We also offer Express Mail from USPS and all Shipping Services from UPS

It was your fault for not requesting full insurance for your package. You could've also chosen UPS which cost just a tad more than USPS and is automatically insured to $100.

Johnny,

If interested, email and maybe we can work out a deal. I have a trailing point Li'l Temperence that isn't getting any lov'n since I got the leaf shape blade. It is in great shape. I would have emailed you but don't see an email for you.

I have done literally hundreds of trades with no problem. Recently, it finally happened. A knife sent to me by priority mail has yet to arrive. I don't think it has been thirty days yet though. I plan to wait thirty days and then if it has not arrived I will forget the thing ever existed. Sorry to hear yours isn't there. I hope you like it, when you get it. Well, now see what you did? Now I think I need A Lil' Temperence too! I have to quit coming to Bladeforums. I thought I would be safe in GBU. Guess not.
