Knife magazine ... question

I'm becoming pretty avid about knife collecting, but am still a noob compared to you guys. I'm trying to decide what magazine subscription would fit my knife interests (I was surprised there are so many knife enthusiast magazines to chose from). I thought if I listed my knife preferences, maybe you guys could point me in the right direction as to which magazine would suit me best:

LIKES:

Late model Case, GEC, Schatt & Morgan ... traditional folders.

DISLIKES (not really dislikes, just not my preference):

Vintage / older knives, tactical knives, expensive custom knives.

As always, thanks for your help ! ::tu::

I like Knife World but like you said, there are many others. Knife World covers a variety of knives including those that you are most interested in. I'm no expert but I don't know of a periodical magazine that covers only your interests.

There are some excellent books (not periodicals) on GEC and Case. I don't own any of the Case books but here's a couple on GEC and the GEC brand names. Both are very interesting reads.

Who needs a magazine with this forum? They are simply ads, and ads disguised as articles. With more ads. Here you can actually pick your favorite topic of interest for the day, and find tons of info from very knowledgeable people. Sure a bunch of crap info and opinions too, but that's easy to pick apart. And if you are just dying to pay for a subscription, there's those here too. ;) But with this subscription, you can actually buy/sell/trade if you want to.

I get Blade mag.

I just finished up a year of Blade, and I dunno. I kinda found it "dry", maybe more suitable for knife makers and industry insiders than the collector. I will say the photography was excellent, but as a previous reply here stated, there was a lot of ads, like 1/2 the magazine. I've always wondered about something else, this Forum is "BladeForums", but is not affiliated with Blade Magazine, theirs is "KnifeForums". Did the site devs here beat em to the punch, name wise, or was there a division of sorts? not to stir the pot, just curious.

Knife World offers a couple of free sample issues to see if you'll like it -

Also, I'm pretty sure Knives Illustrated and Blade can be found at larger book sellers, so you might want to give them a look over. Looking at your likes, Knife World might be the best.

I like Knife World, but several years ago I decided to pay for a Gold or higher membership here on BF, rather than have periodicals mailed to me. I learn more here than I did with printed media.

This is my thought. I pick up a knife mag on the shelf every once in a while and it is enjoyable. That said, they are just big ads, and in any given mag it is easy to find multiple errors, omissions, or out right wrong information. BFC is the place I go when I need to know something.

Knifeworld huh? I'll give it a try. Thanks for the link 👍

Kinda looks like Coin World..that format.

I used to read the knife magazines. But I now get more info from this forum and other web sites than I get from the magazines. I quit reading the mags several years ago.

There really aren't any good knife magazines. There never have been IMO.

The forums are your best bet.

I've had blade magazine for breakfast reading this year and like stated previously, it's nothing special. Entertaining for sure, but I browse them through pretty quickly. It's mostly just same adverts from magazine to magazine.

Knife World is the source of much of the information in the traditional forum. Not only do they publish the magazine but also a number of reference books.

You might not realize this, but some of the respected posters in the traditional and Levine collecting forum are also authors of articles in Knife World. Their articles always contain more information than their posts on-line.

Blade magazine is a different story. Many articles seem to vehicles for manufacturers. For example, they did an article on serrated knife sharpeners and did not include the Sharpmaker, which was designed for serrated knives by the leading serrated knife manufacturer. They did include sharpeners that were advertised in the same issue. However, even in Blade there is some truth, it's just not worth $30 a year.

One thing books and magazines do is the leg work in compiling information that would take you a long time to find on your own, if you could find it on the internet.

I spend my knife magazine money for a yearly Gold membership here. I never sell knives, so don't need it for that, but I do spend a lot of time here, and owe all my knowledge to this place.

Having said that, if I am traveling, I will pick up a copy of Blade Magazine for the airplane and/or taxi ride. I hate using data on my phone.

I used to subscribe to most of the knife magazines and I still have a few file cabinets packed with approximately 30 years worth of back issues; but I stopped over 10 years ago. With the dedicated knife forums like this one, and the internet in general, there is little to be gleamed from these publications. It like reading yesterday's news. The best of them was Knife World, which often had very interesting articles on obscure knives, by very knowlegeable knife writers. The rest of them usually read like the latest manufacturer's catalog.
