Knife Magazines

I'm on my first subscription to Blade and I probably will not renew. A lot of the custom and artsy knives stuff doesn't appeal to me. It might be because I know I can't afford many of those. I've read Tactical Knives at the bookstore, more my kinda style but I don't like 6 magazines a year subscriptions and it almost seemed a little "mall ninja" in a way. Maybe I'm just picky, but I've dropped my subscriptions to Guns n Ammo and American Handgunner too. The magazines aren't just "doing it for me" if ya know what I mean. I'm just gonna stick to web content. YMMV.

I don't currently subscribe to any, but my favorite is Tactical Knives. I use subscribe to TK, KI, and use to pick up Blade and KW off the news stand when availabile.

I'm on my second year of Blade magazine.
It's pretty good, but I'm interested in finding a new mag that focuses more on production knives though.

That said,I'd like to see where this thread goes.

My personal favorite if probably Tactical Knives.

The other knife magazines I have read seem to spend a lot of time on high end custom and art knives. Cool stuff, but not really where my interests lay. Tactical Knives, on the other hand, focuses a lot more on not just "tactical" knives, but a wide varitety of production and custom "users".

I've been let down by many of the mags I have subscribed to in the past. I now go to the bookstore, get a cup of coffee and sit in an easy chair for an hour reading them all for nothing! I too care little for the article about the $12000 knife of King Whatshisface.

I've read Blade, Knife World, Tactical Knives and Knives Illustrated.

I let my subscription to Blade run out a few years ago after about six years.

My conclusion is that Knife World is the best. The writing is consistently better and they don't cover off the wall topics. I couldn't care less what knife some random soldier in Iraq is carrying to open his can of beans, or what knife will save my life when I mysteriously find myself lost on the mean streets of southeast Asia.

I like knives and I want to read about knives.

A few years back, Knife World did a very nice piece on the history of the Victorinox Soldier, a knife I carry every day. The topics are of interest to me.

It was a shock the first time an issue showed up that was in color though.

Used to read Fighting knives, with Greg walker,in the 80s.Now I read them all,but mostly like TK.What ever became of G.Walker? Also, what happened to Jerry Vancook of TK?

Blade has started publishing more historical articles, publicizing makers and manufacturers who reproduce old designs. Other than that, they are primarily eye candy, with the occassional good article from various field editors.

Tactical Knives caters more to the SERE/SAR/military crowd. I really enjoyed TK up until a couple issues ago, they had focused more on traditional woodsy fixed blades.

Knives Illustrated, I just don't like the graphics layout. Articles are okay.

Knife World is my favorite, but sometimes their focus remains too much on antique knives, and, while it is geared more towards collectors, and I am a user, they don't have to change just because of me.

I'm going to let my subs run out to TK and Blade, and probably renew Knife World. It seems to have just the right balance of information and eye candy.

+1. I'm letting my BLADE sub. drop when it's time for renewal, and I'm starting Knife World.

Tactical Knives is a little more down to earth, I think, less artsy & more practical, but definitely 'mall-ninja'-ish too.

There seems to be a common theme here. And I appreciate that. I don't mind subscribing to a magazine, but I hate receiving something in the mail each month that is just going to sit around until I get tired of looking at it and throw it away.

I am not interested in reading about $3000 museum pieces. I am not interested in reading about how to swing a ninja sword. But I am interested in learning about up and coming makers, new steels, and different skill developments.

It sounds like Tactical Knives or Knife World might be the way to go.

Bumped into Greg down in Baghdad when I was deployed here in 2004. Had my wife send me my copy of Battle Blades and he wrote a real nice inscription for me. Really nice guy.

Rather amazing that this morning I started to think about getting a subscription to a knife magazine and was hovering over the "subscribe" button on Blade. But decided I wanted to find out a bit more about what other magazines were out there and what types of articles each head. And of course this thread pops up and saves me all the trouble :) Sounds like Tactical Knife and Knife World are a bit more in line with my interests so far.
