Knife Maker question!

I'm not an experienced knife maker but I have done some math in my life time. It seems you under estimate the cost of knife making. Even the cheap route isn't that cheap especially if you are starting from scratch. A workbench, a grinder, a vise, sandpaper/belts, files, steel, handle material, pins, etc... The list goes on and so do the expenses. If you sell 10 knives at $100 each you might be lucky to breakeven on the initial start-up costs.

Please post a few photos soma few of us newbies can see. Thanks

Alright. I will get some pics up asap. I don't have them on hand tho, I was helping out my friend who wanted 100 to give out as gifts. He kept around 5? I'll ask him about it. Oh and KC Custom, I will fill it out right now.

Ikr... which is why i didn't want to price them at like $50 All the equipment together (With a cheap grinder) is around $400 already

I will post a pic up as soon as possible. My friend asked me to help out, he wanted to give out as gifts for his wedding. I am not trolling -_- he only kept a few, I will get some from him

Although I didn't make the handles.

The best advice I can give you is get a good grinder right up front. Is may set you back but you won't regret it.

I just ordered a Pheer, I got the kb327 model with a tefc motor. Worked out to $985 shipped. That's variable speed 3 wheel dustproof goodness right there. I definitely agree with the others, get the BEST grinder you can afford. If I had the money I would have gotten the KMG, it is a tank of a machine.

Thanks. Very useful :)

I've got a Pheer on order too. Hoping it will come in a couple weeks, if his 5 week estimate includes the grinders he's got on the list before mine. I'm hopeful, as others have said it just took 5 weeks for theirs, but then, they didn't mention what his list looked like at the time of order. There were 10 ahead of me :(

It's belt-sander if you're sanding wood, and a belt-grinder if you're grinding metal.

I've made a fair amount of knives and have never been bothered by not having a bench grinder. I can remove metal on a simple 2x42 more quickly, more accurately, and to a far higher finish than I ever could with a bench grinder.

I agree, James. I have two bench grinders that I used to use all the time. They are practically worthless as grinders to me now. One is now a buffer / wire wheel, and the other I should sell, but they share a stand.

But don't you also have to purchase a motor not included in the KMG? or is that not required?

The motor is in fact sold seperately. You can find them a lot cheaper than what Rob has listed on his site however. Especially if you buy used.
