Hey everyone, it was suggested to me that I ask this question here to see if I can find what I'm looking for. I really want to get in to making my own knives but I don't know where to start. I've been pointed in the right direction as far as resources go. What I would like is to find someone currently making knives that I can shadow. I'd like to find someone to learn from and in exchange help out in any way I can. I pick up things fast and work hard.

A little back round info on me:
My name's Tom, I've been and Infantryman in the Army for 8 years.
Age 26
Originally from Ohio
2006-2007 Paktika Province, Afghanistan (4BCT 10th MTN)
2007-2009 Baghdad (Sadr City), Iraq (4BCT 10th MTN)
2010-2011 Pech River Valley (mouth of the Korengal), Afghanistan (1BCT 101st)

To anyone willing to help me out with what I'm looking for thanks in advance!

Tom,

I have a one time opportunity for you. I'll be in your area tomorrow and Friday (17th & 18th).
I am new to the horrible addiction of knife making, but I'm willing to share everything I have learned so far.
The downside is I'll be moving the entire time, and I'm not making knives here, but we can certainly chat about it. If you have some free time you are welcome to join us and I'll share while we walk. (You will likely find the reason I'm here and walking interesting...)
Check out the schedule here --> http://www.carrytheload.org/the-relay/route-list
Due to the logistics of this event I won't be available from 2200 on the 17th to 0800 on the 18th.
You can email me at dfib@charter.net or just show up at an exchange point and introduce yourself.

Tom, I was at Ft Campbell in 1969 before I got orders for Nam. There's a fellow named Kim that lives in Clarksville. He makes a few knives and is a field editor for Blade. I found this email address for him on another knife forum: sfbreed@yahoo.com

Thanks a lot for the tip Raymond, just sent him an email.

Dfib- I'd love to take you up on that offer however I'll be out of town for my buddy's bachelor party.

Tom,

I'm sorry I didn't see this post sooner. I just ended a 6 week stretch of TDY at Ft Campbell. (I live in Huntsville AL) Feel free to pm me and I'll try to help.

I'm in the Nashville area, but I am only 80% of the way through my first knife and still learning myself. I have annealed, shaped, ground the bevel (chisel grind), hardened, tempered, media and bead blasted it so far. Next step is to glue on the handle. I'm afraid I wouldn't be of much help. You're welcome to PM or email me, broomheadzATliveDOTcom. I'll help where I can.
