Knife Maker's Map Idea

Hey guys,

I have created a map showing the location of the knife makers.
"Why?" you might ask
I am a university student who loves knives and fascinated about knife making. I have tried to make knives on my own, but I always wanted to have a real teacher. That is why I came across this idea. Just like finding a nearby gas station, this map allows you to find a knife maker near you, so that you may decide to contact them, and possibly arrange an apprenticeship. For the knife makers, this allows you to pass on the skills and knowledge to the next generation if you like. Of course, these uses are simply my hypothesis, and I think there may be other uses for the maps as well.

This idea may or may not work out, so I decided to get it out there ASAP, so we can shape it along the way. Please go to the website and leave your comments. Your words matters.

Start with the directory pages of knives annual

The ABS membership ,the guild membership

That sort of thing

Made me think of those clowns that posted all the address's of gun owners in that eastern state (forgot which one it was).

It was NY. Ask me how I know.

As Count said, start with the annuals and directories. Here's the problem though, those listings are probably to help those makers sell knives. While many makers do enjoy contributing here and elsewhere they have neither the time nor inclination to take on students. And as Quint mentioned it would sort of be "outing" makers who might want to keep a low profile. We are living in bizarro times when a tool as simple as a knife can strike fear into certain segments of the population. All the "we know better than you" elites need would be a literal road map to find all the makers in the event there was " a crisis they wouldn't want to waste".

I would definitely get the permission beforehand of each and every maker before adding to the map (if you have not done so already with the ones listed). It's one thing to have a website with your address but another thing to have like Marc said "A roadmap to find all the makers" might not be something someone wants. But for the ones that want to participate in it I think it's a cool idea, but I think the ones who would participate will be far far less than the ones who would not, just to avoid being inundated with people begging and pestering to apprentice

While I don't think it will work, I think it's a great idea. I'll add my name, even though I'm not much of a maker. I love the idea of clicking on a map and seeing who's in the area. I'm opposed to the idea of listing street address, phone, or e-mail, but I'd love to have the names listed of all the nearby makers. That leaves it up to me to actually track them down and make contact. For example, when I went to Branson I looked up Gary Mulkey and had a great visit. Far more enjoyable than "the worlds most redneck stage show."

Don't list too much info... Use business addresses that are openly available. There are a lot of us that are LEO's, gov't employees, or just like our privacy. My suggestion is to simply search, and if its freely available, go ahead and link/list it. Don't, for example, use spokeo to find addresses/phone numbers, etc that aren't out there.

There are a lot of professional organizations that do this sort of list, but I can't recall any interactive maps... Should you do the leg work and put it all together it would certainly be interesting.
