Knife Making is so Easy Anyone could do it!

Driving stock cars looks pretty easy. Go fast, turn left. Heck, I've won lots of races on PlayStation, I'm good to go! Who wants to sponsor me? :D

So, first, we'll give the guy a break. Second--Invite him over here! This will either be his first and last handmade knife, or we can be enablers and get another maker hooked. . . heh heh!

Makes sense to me

The guy mentioned by the OP is getting his feet wet and realizing some stuff, so I'm gonna leave that alone. Good for him.

I do get approached by alot of people who learn that I make knives, and the next question they most all have is "can you make me one?" kind of like they think I can just bust one out in 15 minutes (and it will be free).

When I started, I had all the confidence in the world because I read Goddard's, and Boye's books ten thousand times, and watched all the videos, and saw every internet WIP known to man.

"This ain't hard. I'm gonna rock this thing!" I thought.

Put your hands on a bar of steel and press it on a fast moving abrasive belt for the first time. There are so many other unconsidered factors going on that no amount of reading and viewing can prepare you. My "fail box" and all my scars are a testament to that.

Nah, the guy's absolutely right. My first knife was friggin perfect....until I made my second knife, and tenth, etc. Still, after a dozen or so years, haven't made a "perfect" knife. But Darned, I'm still after that dream. $120.00? I wish him well. Invite him in, love to talk to him.

Making knives is easy. The hard part is making knives other people want. I have a drawer with half a dozen knives in it. It has a pad lock, and none of the knives have anything on them that would identify me as the maker.

haha I have a half dozen or more knives that are in really good shape, with my mark on them that nobody seems to want. :p

I had a friend a couple of years ago that decided he wanted to try knifemaking. He said
why can't I go to the local farm & barn and buy the steel ? " I just don't understand this
heat treat thing"
Ken.
