Knife Making Kits

le me just go ahead and say... YES that would be great. Makes things for us new guys so much easier with the instructions and everything included in the kit etc. and offering the ht as part of it is the best part so we dont have to find someone else willing to do it.

Years ago there was a shop in Glendale California that you could walk into and he had blanks hanging on the wall and handle materials of all kinds you could mix and match and buy. You could also draw out a design and he would rough it out for you. I loved that place! But the owner died and the shop closed and I didn't make another knife after that. I think it would be a great service to the wannabe knife makers of the world if you did this.

Perfect Idea!! What types of steel will you be offering. If any are stainless, I will definitely buy a kit, this is the intermediate step I and others are looking for between tinkering with handles and investing in the proper metal working/HT tools!

THANK YOU!

Not to mention that if you were making a kit, I'd be soooo proud to have a blade blank from you. You are a true ambassador of knife making. Your posts have been inspirational for me with all the info you provide. Everything from PID controlled forges to drawfiling a piece of 1080..... I'd(will) buy one for sentimental reasons. :o :o

The knifemaking community is a better place having you in it.....

I'm excited about this! I found a post here about you making up a starter kit for beanies who don't have a ton of money for supplies and tools and I've been praying. ;)
Can't wait to see pricing and styles of these blades.

I'll post when the first are on the Exchange.

Thank you for all the kind things you said here and in some emails.

hi,
where are you with these ideas? am looking to buy blades and maybe barter wood knife scales for blades.
thanks

I do know that this went around the Becker forum (another batch of people that love to mod) a wile back and got the same kind of positive responses. They were calling it a KIB.

I have shelved the project until the new shop gets built. These kits will take a lot of time to get together, so I decided not to overload my plate. Like I always say, "When it starts being work, it stops being fun!"
I still will be doing them, so stay tuned.

any progress on making kits? i agree about the work and fun side. like i tell my kids, grandkids, nephews, the only thing fun and job have in common is they are three letters long. have left over wood for making several knives. dogwood and spalted maple. interested in swapping ??? for some?

I have put together a few knives like this, 7 I think. There are a couple of places online that sell blade blanks, handle slabs, bolts, brass rod, etc. I made a thread recently showing the steps for my latest one. I have considered soliciting blade blanks from some of the custom makers here but haven't had much time to pursue it. The problem for me with buying blade blanks from online sources is that I can't find the blade styles that I want, the finish that I want or the steel that I want.

As for what to offer, I think it would be a lot of work to make up full kits and stock all of the materials needed. Unless your goal is to start a fulltime store I think the work of buying, stocking and packaging materials would detract too much from your focus as a blade maker. You should concentrate on making blades, and let your potential customers buy their materials from other established online sources. I think you could offer blades in a couple of different states of finish- IOW not finish sanded, already finish sanded, and polished.
