So I will make this quick. We are filming more of the shop stuff. In the past, videos took forever to film, edit and post. One video would take days of editing. I could not afford spending all that time not working on shop stuff. So we tryied somthing out last weekend that I think it will work good. The wife just films me doing my normal things and she edits it down on the computer and combines all the clips into one 15min video. The time waiting for the steel to reheat is all chopped out and a lot of the forging steps are sped up. She then hands it to me and I do voice over commentary on what is going on. I know it’s not as engaging as talking while working. But that takes so much time and planning and retakes. This way I can just work and get done what I need done then when relaxing inside I can do the audio. The audio in the shop was a big hassle as it had to be recorded remotely on a seperate mic in order to get clear good quality voice over the shop noises. Then it was scinked up to each video clip and trimmed. With this new way I just watch what she compiled and explain as it’s playing and it records a seperate audio track. You still have the shop background audio but much clearer vocals.

So with that all said, what’s your thoughts. Also what do you want to see done. Right now we are working through a forged knife from start to finish and not missing step. First video I’m going to be releasing Monday I think. Ben (Greenberg) has donated a lot of nice handle material to this endeavor so you will get to see some of the exalent wood he offers.

Thanks guys and like I said above this is a work in progress so I’m looking for advise and tips on what you want to see.

Wow that was not real quick lol

Hey great stuff! like watching others and learning from different ways! I fall for the daily knifemaking VLOG stuff like SimpleLittleLife on youtube.. Nice to see how another maker goes about their day with a quick intro of what needs to be done that day, then videos of the work with an overvoice or music then a closing talk at the end.

Where do we go to watch!?

JT, I think you've got the right idea with the voice over. It can provide much better audio, with better detail on what you're doing. Trying to do the voice while actually doing can be awkward. Doing the voice over after editing, you've got a chance to put exactly the right words at the right time. Great idea! Looking forward to watching some videos.

Specific focus areas I'd be interested in:
Specific to carbon steels requiring thicker edge pre-heat treat
-Marking the edge and performing the initial grind at 45 degrees
-Setting initial plunge lines and grind pre-heat treat
-performing final grind to finished edge thickness
-with special emphasis on how to not under/over grind the tip

-Sharpening on the belt grinder

-Handle shaping. Specifically how to shape the front of the handle prior to glue up

-how to maintain flats w/o a surface grinder/disc grinder

-finishing spines/bottom of handles.

Thanks.
