I started my research into knifemaking 7 years ago, hit files to steel five years ago, making abominations, drooling over pictures of shops, KMG's and Evenheats. Over the years, I acquired those things. It's taken me until recently to get to the point where I'm confident with my knives and I still don't call myself a maker. Everything I have done up to this point was a gift, I've done some commissions for friends and have charged barely to cover my cost.
As far as a kickstarter goes, if I would have had all the cash in the world five years ago, I still would have made abominations for a while, just with nicer equipment.
It's difficult to tell where you are at, or were at when you sold your tools. We're you selling at that time? Fully invested in good equipment?
If I were you, I would determine a long term goal of what you want to do and how bad you want to do it. Go from there and reacquire your tools and skill simultaneously. Or, hit the lotto!
Do you have any pictures of your work?
