Hi Folks,

Please bear with me on these questions. My father is retiring this year and i am aiming to get him a proper folder. That being said, which model spyderco do you think I should buy him?

:p Anyways, he likes to carry a folding knife in his back pocket beside his wallet. This is his preference and I have no intentions of trying to change that. What I am wondering, is the actual dimensions of the Mnandi & Small Sebbie when closed. He is willing to rough up a piece of wood to size to see if a knife fits. I am looking for length, width & height. I did check the sticky & Reeve's site without luck

I am personally hoping the small fits for him as the plain Ti slab will provide a beautiful canvas for some appropriate engraving! :)

Thanks a lot for your help!
Chris

I would get him the CF ZDP 189 Caly 3. :D

Seriously now, these are rough measurements done with my old fashioned measuring stick on my small sebenza. 4" long x 15/16" wide x 6/16" thick (without the clip) or 9/16" thick (with clip).

Other than the thickness (which is uniform other than the screws and clip) the other two measurements were from the longest and widest points.

I don't have a Mnandi, yet, so I can't help you there.

My Mnandi measures approximately 3 9/16 inches long, 7/8 inches wide (widest part of blade spine to back of handle), and 3/8 inches thick w/o clip, 1/2 inches thick including clip, which extends 1 3/4 inches from end of knife.

Oh, and my calfskin pouch, with Mnandi inside, is approximately 4 5/8 inches long, 1 7/8 inches wide, and 3/4 inches thick.

Thanks a lot for the help folks!

I have sent the specs off to him to see if either one meets his needs. :)

So have you pointed him to chrisreeve.com to look at the Mnandi and small Sebenza? Does he have a preference for wood or Ti handles, thumb stud or milled thumb slot, etc.? What does he carry now?

You know those cheap knives folders with the wood inlay and metal bolster? The ones that companies normally use as promo items? Yeah... Other issues like wood type or ti would never have entered his mind.

I have pointed him to the site to let him dig around, however I knew he would be wanting the specs to see what fits his needs as well.

His head is officially spinning right now! :D

He really likes the looks of the Mnandi, however he like the bare slabs on the Sebenza for the ingraving plans. Then he noticed the damascus blades! In a period of about 10 minutes he picked out no less than 10 combinations as his "favorite" one! ;)

Fun! :D

You could always get him both an Mnandi and a small Sebenza! :D
I guess I'm not the member of Buyers Anonymous you want to call.

At least your Dad carries a knife. I can't get my Dad to carry one. Although when he volunteers at the local nature center, he carries a Leatherman Supertool I gave him, and always seems amazed that he keeps finding uses for it. Go figure, you carry a pocketknife or other tool, and they come in handy.

I think you might be having more fun watching him try to pick out a knife than he's having being a kid in a candy store. Savor this time with your Dad, it doesn't get much better.

An interesting tidbit that I found out this summer was that i get my interest in high end knives from him! He just chose to avoid them once my brother and I came along in order to provide for the family. Time to help him make up for lost time! :)

He did leave my place after his last visit this summer with a Busse Game Warden that I had loaned him while we were camping & he really liked. Now he needs a great EDC folder!
