Knife Negligence (Lesson Learned)

So, we had a little wake up call at our home yesterday evening. My 3 year old stabbed himself in the butt with a very sharp and very rusty Schrade Old Timer that belonged to my grandpa.
My wife keeps the knife in her car to use when necessary.

I was outside with Jasper working on my jeep and I noticed him climbing into my wifes car. I didn't think too much of it, he does it all the time.
Then, the next thing I see is him crying and running toward me with blood streaming down his leg and his whole foot is bloody. Me and my wife were both freaking out trying to figure out what happened.
I go to her car and see the open knife in the front seat of her car. I asked him if he was playing with the knife and he says, 'no', because he knows he isn't supposed to handle knives.
He was more scared of getting in trouble than of the gaping wound on his butt check. I could easily stick my finger inside the hole that the knife made.

We spent about 2 hours at the emergency room just for the nurse to put anit-bacterial cream on the wound and place a Band-Aid on his butt. They said they couldn't sew up a puncture wound. It has to be a 'clean cut' with obvious edges to be sewn together.

Below is a pic of how far the knife went into his butt. That's a solid 1 1/2'' puncture wound there.

I feel horrible. Lessons were learned by everyone yesterday.

Personally, I thinks it's more of a lesson learned on the child's end, not yours...

When I was young, my mom kept a can of pepper spray hidden away. She always told me how "dangerous" it was and to "never touch it". Well, one day I wanted to see how it worked, so I snuck the spray outside and shot it into the wind. The wind blew every drop right back into my face:D I was home alone, and I had to ride out the pain on my own...lesson learned:D I learned really fast to not mess with that stuff ever again.

I'm sure your son learned a very hard lesson, but I personally believe that you are not at fault. I imagine he will have more respect for these tools in his coming years. I'm glad he was ok:thumbup:

Thanks for the uplifting advice.

Its just so easy to get too comfortable with our knives and then forget that they can do serious damage. That blade is sharp enough to shave with even though its so beat up looking.

On the plus side, it happened in about the best place possible. My boy now has a Forrest Gump 'million dollar wound'.

It could have been much much worse.

how'd he get a stab wound on his butt? was the knife left open on the seat and he sat down on it?

Oops, Left that part out.

He opend the knife, sat it down on the seat, then scooted sideways into the blade.

Great lesson for all concerned!!
So glad the little dude don't do serious damage!!
Thanks for posting!

Wow! He's lucky that the blade has a nice patina on it and not any rust, 'cause that could've been much worse.

Literally. Glad he's okay! So did your wife leave the knife open on the seat or what was the cause? I started working with my Daughter and knives around 6. Until then they were out inaccessible to here or on me. She is 9 now and has a couple of her own she uses under supervision and she also works in the kitchen with me. I don't have to watch over her should anymore. She knows how not to cut herself in the kitchen. She also knows that if she does cut herself it is her fault with either not paying attention or improper technique. She learned that by cutting herself. I don't worry about leaving knives around anymore though I would leave an open folder some where it was not expected.

Wow, I'm truly glad for all involved( especially him ) that he's okay.
I'm surprised that he was able to open it, my old knives like that are a pain to open up and my 3 yr old wouldn't be able to do it.
Thank God it was only the "meat", I bet he's more careful now as he'll be reminded everytime he sits down for a while.
I hope he heals quickly.

I see. Bet he won't do that again.

Yeah, he wouldn't tell us what happened at first because he was afraid of getting in trouble.

Now he will tell us that he wont play with knives.

My lesson is to treat my knives more like my guns. Always know where every knife is located at all times.

Really glad he's OK, that's the most important thing here for sure.

I guess if this had to happen, the butt is not the worst place to stab yourself, so in a strange way, that's a lucky thing.

I have 3 young children, and I keep my blades as far away from them as I can.
I am constantly teaching them about knives and how to handle them, but at 3 years old this becomes more of a "just stay away" lesson than anything else.

At that age, they are just too curious and aren't mentally ready to really understand.

At the end of the day, accidents always happen so don't feel too bad about it.
hindsight is always 20/20 and sure there's alway's something you could have done differently.

Most important thing is that he's OK.

Good idea. Glad I am past that stage with knives.

At 3 you can't let them out of your sight. It's a pain in the ass (:))to have to watchem all the time, but mistakes happen to everyone, don't torture yourself, be happy it wasn't worse.

Wow,, having a little guy myself all I can say is, thank goodnes he's ok.
Lesson learned for sure,,

I've got a 2 year old that is just like me when I was between 3-6 I got into the pepper spray in a car and prayed myself with the windows up.

Found dad's knives and thought it was so cool to hut the edges together and make sparks ,until I took a quarter of the tip of my thumb off.

Just goes to show us parents how smart our little ones are and they pick up on everything . Things I thought I had hid my daughter has came running in the room with.

We keep telling our daughter to pet our cat , she treats the cat like her puppy though and pulls her tails sometimes. Last night she started screaming and we ran into her room and she had a scratch on her face and she was saying bad kitty!

I said did you pull the kitty's tail? Instant screams at the top of her lungs told me what she did lol.

Glad he's ok and glad people see this for what it is an accident . The wrong Dr. Or the wrong nurse could of made this a real headache for all involved . Glad he's ok and it wasn't blown way out of proportion
