Kept this one pretty simple, 1584 layers of 01 and 1095. One side looks great and the other not so good. I managed to find a layer or layers (not sure if it is one or multiple???) that blocked the pattern. I tried sanding more and they kept growing and I had to stop as I reached the point where I felt I just had to stop or have a paper thin knife. The handle is Afzelia Burl and brass pins. I shaped the handle to where it is comfortable for my hand as I plan on using this one a lot. Still need to sharpen it and seal the wood as it is not stabilized. Any recommendations on what to seal it with? Looked at the hardware store and there is only about 50 things that say they will do the job but...

Let me know what you think. Blade length is 6 3/4" x 1 3/8" at its widest. Over all is 11 1/4"

Interesting look. I don't know why, but it looks like much less than 1584 layers. Mine look like that at 200 or so layers. Can you give the fold routine?

Just a few comments on the shape. The taper from the cutting edge to the handle seems strange. Also, you need to round that handle of a bit. Right now it is a block of wood on a knife blade.

The above isn't meant to detract from the fact that your number two knife is a damascus camp knife....not bad at all.

Fold count is 11-66-264-792-1584, it looks bigger because the top and bottom pieces are flipped to end grain. (I think) There are 100's of little tiny lines my camera could not pick up. I should have taken some of the handle, it is a lot rounder than it looks, each side is different also as I wanted it to fit my hand just right. Thanks for the honest opinion of it.

It has pretty much the shape of an ol' Green River. Thousands were used in the days of buffalo hunting. I like the pattern of the Damascus.

OK, that makes sense. If you flipped the outer pieces 90 degrees, they would not increase in layer count, so the sides would look like they were either 66 or 264 layers ( whichever is the one you flipped at). This would not change after that point.

Kinda looks like a giant, damascus butter knife. The lack of a guard and tapered edge near the ricasso really scare me. I'm not sure if it was your intent, but it looks like the knife is very old and weathered. Was it intentional or just the photography?

The intent was to have it look like it has been around a while and I guess I pulled it off. Right now it is a big butter knife as it is not sharp yet. The intent of the design is a combination skinner, cutter, all purpose knife. I think it is a very functional form. But I made it for me so naturally I would like it. I appreciate the honest feedback.

You know what, I appreciate the "been around a while" look a lot more than I do the "so fancy I don't want to get fingerprints on it" look.
