First off I want to thank Zaph1 for trading me the corian that is the new handle for a piece of Damascus I made. Being unemployed STILL (AHHHH blank blank use imagination blank)it would never have got done without the trade.

Some of you probably remember my 1st thought with this knife and it was a disaster in the handle dept. Just for kicks here is an old pic of the disaster.

Here is the new handle, shaped for a right handed person or at least what feels comfortable for this right handed person.
Let me know what you think. It is not perfect but better than the 3rd knife that is certain. It is right at 12" long, 1.75" deep and touch over an 1/8" thick. 660 layers of 01 and 1095.

A view of the shape of the handle.

Very unusual style. Not sure it appeals to me but that's OK. I like what you did with the pins/liners along the spine- pretty cool. I'm surprised you are making damascus for your first knives, it will come out looking a lot cleaner if you work on your grinding skills and get a smooth sanded finish of 600 or more to etch from. Detail shots of the handle and the transition from handle to blade on the spine at the guard look actually pretty nice, you pulled that off- I did notice what looks like a mean platen gouge on the reverse side close to the guard. A little more practice and that stuff won't happen anymore. Keep it up, looks promising.

Cut down some trees in the back yard about a year ago and stacked them up. Decided today to clean it up. Took this knife and hacked branches off, then hacked them into smaller pieces. Took a few hours to do and after all that it still cuts paper. It chops real nice which was the intention of the knife. The shape of the handle just works out perfect. I am now real happy that I know it can take some serious abuse and stay sharp.

Well if the knife does what you intended it to do,thats satisfaction,in my book, many plp have many opinions, your design is like no other and thats a good thing, use your imagination hard telling what the next one will turn out like! Skill comes from hands on hrs in the shop, all you can do is try,try again till you get there, and your definatly getting there!good job buddy, now chop the hell outta something, post some more pics!

Thanks, with the few knives I have made they are different than the rest of the flock and few people seem to like them but I will probably never make what traditionally is thought of as a knife design. Doing what everyone else does is just to me, quite boring. This one, people who hold it really dig it, been offered cash for it 3 times now, but I so not want to sell it just yet...Then again, if my broke butt does not get back to work real soon I am going to have to.

Sorry if my point did not come across clearly. Engwish is my second language and it shows, sometimes more than others. :(
I did not imply to change your style or make "boring" knives. Just to work on making your designs more aesthetically pleasing while keeping your individuality.

On a side note depending on how it's done different CAN also be boring and while we are at it, "boring" can be made different, but now I am just getting more and more confused. ;)

Keep up the good work.

Please don't take anything I said personally, I admit I am in a real just BAD mood, can't find a job and things just keep getting worse. Got a phone call today that if I don't pay a loan that my car was used as collateral for will be taken if I do not pay in 48 hours. And it is my birthday, 33 years old. This is supposed to be a good day for christ sake. Ok I am going to go attempt to get off my self pitty potty, see if I cannot pawn my few remaining tools to save the car.

Good day all and please don't take anything personal.

Interesting design
I like the fact the you not afraid of try something different
Keep 'em Coming
I am sure you will make something more traditional,
Whit you own touch some day
Best regards

I like the design. You're welcome for the corian. Happy Birthday! If they don't like it, they can make their own. In fact, they probably will.

Now, on to serious comments, show me some close-ups of the corian where it was glued, please. Is there a line? Did you use the piece I glued or did you glue the other pieces together? I love the pins in the handle the first time, and I still love them in the corian. It kinda reminds me of something a sailor would use on a ship.

What did you think of working with corian? My wife loves it and wants it on the handle of her kitchen knife, but I can't stand working with it. I'm thinking to melt some down and make a poured handle if I do.

There is a real small line but it is not bad at all. I did use the piece you glued, it stayed together right until the very end. I roughed up the edges, epoxied it with black epoxy and then knocked the ends of the 3/8" brass with a hammer. That handle will never come apart I do not think.

I'd take a picture but the camera had to go to the pawn shop...Really sucks, had a job for a few weeks there but then they lost their biggest contract and me and a few others were out the door. But I do not blame their customers, 3 truck loads of stuff came back in 8 days that was all wrong. I'd drop them like a bad habit to. Told the owner you should fire your "veteran" workers and keep me because none of my stuff came back, but with them being his kids that did not happen.

As for working with it, it is not too bad, kinda sucks with a finer belt. But with the respirator and some safety glasses it went pretty smoothly. I think it would mill well at a higher speed. I drilled the middle out so there was just real small areas that needed removed. Then I milled it really really slow as I did it with a drill not a mill. I did not want to fubar the drill, for over a 100 years old it did pretty well for as slow as it turns.

Have you done much with the piece I sent you?

Well, I've looked at it. Dave Larsen etched it to show me the pattern. Still trying to decide what I want to make with it. I'm not a big fan of hunters and I can't think of much else to make with such a large piece of damascus. I'll probably make a couple hidden tang hunters out of it this fall. Too hot to do much grinding this time of year,

How the pattern come out? It was just cut in with an angle grinder and I am not that great at controlling patterns yet. Still got to work on depths of grinds and all that good stuff.

Design is use driven. If you design your knives with a purpose in mind they will end up being a useful tool. The pretty part comes with experience.

Hope 2010 turns around for you and life is good again, Fred
